Shopko on 41st appears on expanded store closing list

Feb. 6, 2019

Shopko has released an updated list of stores it plans to close, and the West 41st Street location is back on the list along with five additional sites in South Dakota.

Local managers haven’t heard the official word yet, but it appears the 41st Street store might close, one manager said.

Shopko announced both Sioux Falls stores were closing Jan. 16 when it filed for bankruptcy and then said the following week that it would remain open.

Twelve South Dakota stores are on the most recent closure list.

Along with the 41st Street store, Chamberlain also appears to have gone from the closure list to the safe list and back to the closure list.

New to the list are stores in Rapid City, Aberdeen, Milbank and Sisseton.

Here’s the full list for South Dakota with closing dates:

  • Sioux Falls, 41st Street: May 12
  • Sioux Falls, Arrowhead Parkway: April 14
  • Dell Rapids: March 2
  • Rapid City: May 5
  • Aberdeen: May 12
  • Redfield: March 2
  • Wagner: March 2
  • Webster: March 2
  • Custer: April 7
  • Sisseton: May 5
  • Chamberlain: May 12
  • Milbank: May 12

Shopko released a statement that said: “Through our conversations with the potential buyers, it has become clear that is in our best interest to operate with a significantly smaller store footprint. Today we are announcing the closure of an additional 139 Shopko and Shopko Hometown stores.”

The company hopes the additional closings will “make ourselves more attractive to potential buyers and successfully emerge from Chapter 11.”

The Wisconsin-based retailer was founded in 1962. At the time if filed for bankruptcy, it was operating more than 360 stores in 26 states. According to reports, 250 stores have closed or will be closed.
