Family Dollar store on Minnesota to close
Aug. 27, 2024
Family Dollar is closing the South Minnesota Avenue store that it opened five years ago.
The closing appears to be part of changes parent company Dollar Tree Inc. announced in March to improve its profitability. The company said it would close 600 Family Dollar stores by early August and an additional 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores in the next several years as those leases expired.
In South Dakota, stores in Beresford, Spearfish, Reliance and Lemmon closed in the spring.
At the store at 2511 S. Minnesota Ave., all merchandise is marked at a 30 percent discount except for alcohol and tobacco, which is 20 percent off, an employee said. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and the final day will be Sept. 14, he said.
The store lease expires Sept. 30, and the company sent notice that it would not be renewed, said Gregg Brown of NAI Sioux Falls, who has the listing for the space.
“It will be a great space for a new tenant,” Brown said of the almost 10,200-square-foot location that has two loading docks. Family Dollar installed new HVAC and ceiling grid systems and LED lights when it moved in, he said.
“We’re hoping we can find another retailer that can backfill the space. … Traffic counts are great on Minnesota Avenue at 26,000 per day,” he said. “It’s a well-known intersection and has a well-known landmark with Bagel Boy,” which is another tenant in the building.
The site’s proximity to university and hospital campuses makes it “a great spot for a future retailer that wants a prominent location,” Brown said.
Family Dollar has two other stores in Sioux Falls at 421 W. Eighth St. and 2805 E. 10th St.
