A new development in northeast Sioux Falls that includes Lewis Drug and Sanford Health is on track for an early 2024 opening.

Construction is underway on the northwest corner of Madison Street and Veterans Parkway on what Sanford “affectionately calls our MVP clinic,” said Kris Denevan, executive director of facilities and support services.

“The exterior of that is mostly done, so they’re really working on the interior spaces and finishing that up. That will be a great location with the Veterans Parkway connection to the interstate. We think it will serve the east side really well.”

The Sanford clinic will include 34 exam rooms, housing family medicine, pediatrics, outpatient physical therapy and women’s services. There also will be a lab, radiology and ultrasound services at the clinic. The physical therapy services are unique, Denevan said.

“I think that is going to be nice because we have physical therapy locations scattered, but we don’t have anything on the east side,” she said.

The plan is to open both Sanford and the Lewis store about the same time in the first quarter or early spring of 2024, Lewis CEO Mark Griffin said.

“We’re excited about the neighborhood because it’s developing so strong, and we’re pretty much providing the whole area out there with retail opportunities and health care opportunities that nobody else is providing right now,” he said. “You still have to drive quite a ways to get to either.”

The new Lewis will be about 30,000 square feet. Griffin compares it to the Sanford and Lewis development on Ellis Road north of 41st Street.

“Very similar, and there’s a few things in the floor plan that are different, but if you’re talking concept-size footprint, it’s right there,” he said.

Both the health system and the retailer also continue to look at co-locating at 57th Street and Veterans Parkway, where Sanford plans some grading in preparation for future growth.

“We’re happy the Veterans Parkway portion of the traffic is completed and now 57th will be completed going east,” Denevan said. “It’s a little bit farther out, not in the next year or two, but that’s definitely one of the next areas we want to look at.”
