Sanford Health and Lewis Drug are beginning construction at a shared development in northeast Sioux Falls.

The Sanford clinic with an attached Lewis Drug retail store and pharmacy will be on the northwest corner of Madison Street and Veterans Parkway.

“When the off-ramp from Interstate 90 onto Veterans Parkway was completed a little over a year ago, we knew this area of town would be in need of health care services,” Andy Munce, vice president of operations at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, said in a statement. “Not only will this clinic provide care close to home for those who live in northeast Sioux Falls, it will also provide essential health care services for communities in southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa.”

The 26,500-square-foot Sanford Madison & Veterans Parkway Clinic will include 34 exam rooms, housing family medicine, pediatrics, outpatient physical therapy and women’s services. There also will be a lab, radiology and ultrasound services located inside the clinic.

The Sanford Health 3D mammography mobile truck will be parked at the new clinic routinely for mammogram access.

The overall clinic size is larger than projected earlier this year, but not as large as the one Sanford previously had announced for 57th Street and Veterans Parkway or the one at 41st Street and Ellis Road, which is attached to Lewis.

Construction on the new clinic will go throughout the summer, with an anticipated opening date in early 2024.

The goal will be to open the new 28,000-square-foot Lewis Drug store around the same time, CEO Mark Griffin said.

“We like rooftops, and I think Sanford does, too, and it’s a fast-growth area,” he said. “It’s also an artery for travel, and there are a lot of new avenues, new roads, new traffic opportunities to get there, and the demographics should be very good — all those things that are important to retail. We’re both very bullish on that part of town.”

It will be store No. 62 for Lewis, which also has a one under construction in Harrisburg attached to a Sanford clinic.
