Sanford, Fairview extend merger closing without new target date

April 3, 2023

Sanford Health and Fairview Health Services have extended the target closing date for their merger past May 31.

In a statement, the two health systems said the extension was “in the interest of ongoing cooperation with the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General” and that they would give the state office 90 days’ notice before closing at a future date.

“We respect the thorough review underway by the Attorney General’s Office and are honoring their request for more time as we continue work toward finalizing our combination,” the systems said in a joint statement.

“We remain confident in the benefits of the merger for our people, patients and communities and our shared vision to advance world-class health care for all we serve.”

The target to finalize the merger had been March 31 and then was extended to May 31.

About a month ago, the University of Minnesota asked its state government for nearly $1 billion to acquire flagship health care facilities that otherwise could be part of a merger between Sanford and Fairview.
