Sam’s Clubs remodels will do away with cashiers

April 21, 2025

All Sam’s Clubs locations will be removing checkout stands in the coming year.

That includes self-check as the wholesale club opts instead for “Scan & Go” technology, Sam’s Club announced earlier this month at an investor meeting.

The cashier stations are expected to be removed in all 600 locations over the coming year, according to Supermarket News.

Scan & Go is tied to the Sam’s Club app. Customers scan items as they shop, pay through the app and receive a digital receipt.

Technology eliminates the need for anyone to check receipts on the way out. Digital receipts can be scanned while a network of cameras blended with the use of artificial intelligence monitors for potential theft.

“Experiences like Scan & Go have become a top reason to join Sam’s Club and to renew,” CEO Chris Nicholas said at the meeting.

“And younger generations are shopping with us, which is a really important health metric for the future of our business. We have a lot of opportunity ahead of us, and we have a plan to deliver on it.”

Scan & Go is integrated into an app that’s designed to provide a comprehensive digital experience inside and outside the club, according to Sam’s Club, including leveraging AI to make product recommendations.

Club members who are engaged digitally shop three times more often than those who shop only in the club, Sam’s Club reported. They also shop across twice as many categories and renew at a 10 percent higher rate.

Sam’s Club sees a route to doubling membership over the next eight to 10 years, he added. That includes building 15 new clubs annually.
