The state of cancer research will be the focus of an annual event this month from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

The annual South Dakota Policy Luncheon will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at The Country Club of Sioux Falls and feature South Dakota Biotech executive director Joni Johnson as the keynote speaker.

“This year’s event will focus on the state of research and innovation in the region and opportunities for increased collaboration at the state, regional and national levels,” said David Benson, South Dakota government relations director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

“We’re looking forward to Joni highlighting the biotech industry and the impact of technology and startups in the area that have a direct tie to cancer research and economic development.”

Johnson has led the state affiliate of the international BIO trade organization since 2012 and oversees its advocacy, communication, education and membership services, representing more than 50 members in industries from food and agriculture to human health and renewable energy.

The luncheon also will feature updates on breakthrough cancer research taking place in South Dakota.

The annual event is an opportunity to convene leaders in business, academia and patient advocacy, as well as elected officials.

“We’re excited to showcase the innovative strides of cancer researchers right here in South Dakota while taking a step back to look at how we can leverage strategic strengths in the state,” Benson said. “In years past, we’ve been at the forefront of highlighting important issues like e-cigarette use, palliative care and improving access to health care coverage.”

The program also will highlight the importance of engaging elected officials to support cancer research funding.

“Every major cancer breakthrough in the past 50 years can be traced back to federally funded research,” Benson said. “It’s important to note that in fiscal year 2017, 495 jobs in South Dakota were supported by NIH (National Institutes of Health) funding, with $68.9 million created in new economic activity based on NIH funding.”
