Restaurant Roundup: YouTube star at The Keg, menu changes, keto desserts

Jan. 3, 2019

A food challenge eater from California with a YouTube channel recently posted a video of her attempt to conquer the Yard Bird Challenge at The Keg in October. Raina Huang ate 2 pounds of chicken tenders, 1 pound of French fries, a pint of baked beans and a pint of coleslaw in 10 minutes and 20 seconds. Contestants are given 45 minutes to eat the food! She raved about the food and made fun of how she mispronounced  “Sioux.” Huang has more than 130,000 subscribers on YouTube, who can watch challenges like her eating the entire value menu at McDonald’s or devouring a 78-ounce ribeye in Montana.

Granite City Food & Brewery has a new main menu coming out Jan. 17, and a few dishes are going away for good. Stop in soon if you’re a fan of the London broil, the chalupas or the Asian and beef short rib flatbreads. And you’ve only got until Wednesday to try the churro doughnut stack on the latest seasonal menu.

Eat Fit Go has added seven items to its menu of prepared meals. The new dishes are sweet potato hash and scrambled eggs, curry bowl with chicken, ravioli with cream sauce, turkey chili loaded baked potato, buffalo-style chicken mac, chipotle chicken salad and cherry chocolate GoGo Bites.

The Phillips Avenue Diner has changed up its feature menu. Instead of monthly specials, the downtown restaurant has switched to quarterly features. Here’s a look at what’s on tap for through March:

Smallcakes Cupcakery & Creamery is switching up its calendar for flavors. The bakery now offers weekly flavors of cupcakes instead of daily ones. It also has moved from having gluten-free cupcakes three days a week to every day. And for people following a keto diet, Smallcakes is starting a series of classes next week on baking keto-friendly desserts. The first class is Jan. 10. The shop at Lake Lorraine also makes keto “fat bombs” and cupcakes once a week.

Hartford and Humboldt restaurants are having their own burger challenge this month. Participating restaurants are Blue 42 Sports Grill with the Hawaiian Burger, Big J’s Roadhouse Bar & Grill with the Double Trio Burger, Hartford Steak Co. Tavern with The Prime Time Burger and The Goat Bar and Grill with Bourbon by the Beach Burger. Diners fill our scorecards to rate the burgers and enter in a weekly drawing for $25 in Hartford Bucks. At the end of January, the burger with the highest average score wins the inaugural title of Best Burger in the Hartford Area.

Caribou Coffee has added coconut milk as an option for its coffee drinks. The coffee shop is featuring three lattes – the coconut milk cold press, coconut milk matcha tea and coconut milk pomegranate acai – but customers can substitute the dairy-free milk in any beverage.
