Restaurant Roundup: Spring menus, breakfast pizza, alligator po’boy

April 6, 2023

Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen has started featuring appetizers created by the chefs at sister company En Place Catering. A new item appears every month. For April, the special is red miso marinated shrimp skewers with a reduction of jjigae – or Korean stew — and cilantro over arugula.

The Hawaiian Plate is back at the downtown restaurant, taking ramen’s place on the menu. The shoyu chicken comes with Island Mac Salad and rice. This year, there’s an option of substituting fried tofu or bulgogi beef for the chicken. Other new menu items are the BBQ Burger and a pulled pork sandwich.

Here’s an unusual-menu-item alert: Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen is serving alligator po’boys while they last.

April features have arrived at CH Patisserie. The specialty croissant is Silk Road with turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, coconut and mango jam. The new beignet is The Awakening with lemon-infused cream and fennel pollen sugar. This month’s French macaron flavor is elderberry.

The downtown bakery also has created a breakfast pizza. Chef Chris Hanmer has been working on the recipe for a while and introduced it recently. A brioche crust is topped with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and cheddar. It’s available Fridays through Sundays.

It’s Downtown Restaurant Week from Friday through April 15, and 17 restaurants and dessert shops are participating this year. The goal of the Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. event is to celebrate local food and sustainable practices. Find out what’s being served — like the dessert below at Minervas — at dtsfrestaurantweek.com.

Ronald Blackman, who gained a reputation over the years for cookouts at his home along West 26th Street, is having a final meal there before moving next month to Tea. His R Cross M Big Country Cooking & Catering will be selling barbecue and a seafood boil from noon Friday until the food is gone at 1412 W. 26th St. Blackman will use the proceeds to finish work on a used food truck he bought last year.

Yakkity Yak Coffee Shack in All American Gymnastics has vivid Peeps frappes heading into Easter. They’re available all week, including Saturday when the Easter Bunny arrives at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. with an all-you-can eat, build-your-own waffle bar, doughnuts, bagels and cereal.

The spring dinner menu at M.B. Haskett Delicatessen will be available beginning tonight. It’s served from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Maribella Ristorante offers special items every month. Up for April: Burrata Fritta, a fried burrata cheese appetizer; Agnello di Pasqua, seared lamb chops; Torta di Ricotta, a creamy dessert; and Il Lato Sud, a dry gin drink with lemon, sugar and mint.

Crisp & Green’s spring menu has arrived. Diners will find three new entrees: the BBQ Smokeshow salad, Crispy Teriyaki grain bowl and Tropic Time acai bowl. There’s also a new drink: Rishi Citrus Green Tea. Returning favorites include the You Feta Believe It salad and Strawberry Jalapeno Fresca.

Poppy’s Popcorn Co. is bringing back savory flavors from years past, featuring a different flavor every month. April’s offering is hot wings and ranch.

Oh My Cupcakes has an annual tradition of celebrating National Unicorn Day with special treats. Saturday, customers can find “Luna” and “Petunia” cupcakes in the case at both locations. Cupcake decorating kits and a special cake can be ordered for pickup on Saturday.

The new year-round location for Sub Zero Desserts at 401 E. Eighth St. is now stocking slices of cheesecake and truffles from Chef Ellen.

Want to help U.S. troops and get a free beer? Shiner Beer is providing a free pint to customers at Sickies Garage when they donate a new item from a special care package item list. Find the list of items and details at sickiesburgers.com.

Upper Cut on East 10th Street has added a small lunch menu to go with the 420 Pizzas that are available all the time.

Happy hours are back at Boss’ Pizzeria & Sports Bar in Tea. Get drink specials and $3 off appetizers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close from Sunday through Thursday.

Every year, the Pink Boots Society gathers women in the brewing industry together at breweries across the country to make a beer crafted with a special blend of hops. WoodGrain Brewing Co. hosted one of the events a few weeks ago, and this week it released Yes Ma’am IPA. The beer has flavors of mango, kiwi, ripe melon and stone fruit — all from the blend of hops from Yakima Chief Hops. It’s available on tap and in crowlers to go. Part of the proceeds will go to the South Dakota chapter of Pink Boots Society.
