Restaurant Roundup: Remedy at 611 grand opening, meal deals, Oktoberfest specials

Remedy at 611, the second taproom for Remedy Brewing Co., is having its grand opening this week and starting regular hours. The celebration will be Friday and Saturday in the “dive bar” set up in the brewery’s production facility at 611 N. West Ave. Customers will find four Remedy beers on tap, and food from ‘Brosia Bowl on Friday and Old Skool Jersey Rippers & Balls on Saturday.

The new space offers pool tables, dart boards, other games and a jukebox. Outside, there’s a beer garden that eventually will include seating, co-owner Matt Hastead said. Hours are 4 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Starting next week, it also will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. Thursdays. Side note: The main taproom at 8th & Railroad Center will be closed Saturday for a private event.

Daily features for $11.49 are back at Original House of Pancakes. Here’s the lineup: Monday, meatloaf dinner with baked potato and buttered sweet corn; Tuesday, turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce; Wednesday, hot beef dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy; Thursday, breakfast burrito; and Friday, choice of burger.

Papa John’s has new Papa Bowls, which basically are pizza toppings baked without the crust. The chain is offering three options: Chicken Alfredo, Garden Veggie and Italian Meats Trio. Customers also can build their own bowl with their favorite toppings.

Red Lobster has two new additions to its annual Ultimate Endless Shrimp offering: Parmesan-Bacon Shrimp Scampi and Argentine Red Shrimp. Other offerings are Shrimp Linguini Alfredo, Walt’s Favorite Shrimp and Garlic Shrimp Scampi. Dine-in customers order two choices to start, and when they’re gone can get additional dishes one at a time. Each meal comes with a choice of side and unlimited Cheddar Bay Biscuits. To-go orders get to mix and match four shrimp dishes. The promotion is available until early November.

Five local chefs are putting their baking skills to the test in a fundraiser Sept. 22 for Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons. As part of Cookies, Corks & Brews, they’ll be making a dessert using their assigned Girl Scout Cookie. Participating chefs are from Let It Fly, Minervas, Chef Ellen, Hy-Vee and Avera Health Specialty Hospital. The event also includes pairings of wine and local craft beers with the cookies. Godfather’s Pizza has a new lunchtime special. Get a free mini one-topping pizza with the purchase of a mini specialty pizza for $6.89. The offer is good from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays.

Cheap eats: At IHOP, $5 will get you two pancakes, two eggs and two strips of bacon.

In September, as part of Family Meals Month, kids can eat for free with each purchase of an adult entrée in the Hy-Vee food service departments and Market Grille and Wahlburgers locations.

Flying Santo Taco Bar, which opened in June, has put together a catering menu featuring burrito or taco bars. Orders must include at least 25 people.

TapHouse 41 is celebrating Oktoberfest with a sausage board. The meal includes kielbasa, barbecue spice hickory smoked sausage and bison sausage, all with homemade pretzel bites, beer cheese, homemade bacon kraut and blackberry IPA mustard. Pair it with the Oktoberfest beer flight.

Obscure Brewing Co. begins its Oktoberfest celebration on Friday with the return of its seasonal brew. The food menu includes the original Obscure bratwurst, a new currywurst pizza and soft pretzels with house mustard sauce. The special food will be available for the next week; the beer for longer.

Fernson Brewing Co.’s annual Fernsonfest is Saturday. The celebration will be from 1 to 11 p.m. at the brewery at 1400 E. Robur Drive. The downtown taproom will be closed. Music will be by Kansas City surf poppers Shy Boys, Minneapolis indie charmers Present Company and local band Isanti. Food will be available from Wagoo Burger, Windy City Bites and Hunny & Bunny, which is closing for the season after the event. For Fernsonfest details, click here.

Lupulin Brewing Co. is celebrating Oktoberfest all day Saturday with the release of Oktoberfest Marzen and Oaked Enjoy an Apfelstrudel Festbier infusion and build your own pretzel necklace to snack on. Show up in lederhosen or dirndls and get a free drink. There will be live music with Lexi McGee from 6 to 9 p.m. and a stein-holding contest.

Changes in hours, service

Because of staffing shortages, the east-side location of The Keg has dropped weekday lunch service. New hours are 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Staffing shortages also are affecting hours at Fancy Bowl. The Asian restaurant downtown is no longer open Mondays.

The B&G Milkyway on West 12th Street is closing for the season on Sunday. Closing specials include deals on half-gallon Avalaches and grab bag novelty treats.

With the arrival of football season, Chasers Food & Spirits is open now on Sundays with hours of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Watecha Bowl has abandoned its change to evening hours only, returning to a more typical lunch through early supper service with afternoon breaks some days. Check Facebook for daily hours. The Native American restaurant also has started three specials: Get five Indian tacos for $35 from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, a piece of frybread for $1 on Fridays, and teachers and students get $5 Indian tacos every day.

Great Shots has new hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The three retail stores for Stensland Family Farms are closing earlier. They’re open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 p.m. Sunday.

The new gourmet soda bar SoDak Soda has shortened its fall hours even more. They’re now 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
