Restaurant Roundup: New featured menus, bagels-for-shakes, pie-inspired cupcakes

March 9, 2023

Ode to Food & Drinks has a few new menu items. At lunch, Chef Bob’s Cuban sandwich has returned, and there’s a new ribeye sandwich. At dinner, try the Asian-Glazed Red Curry Salmon or the Cajun-blackened walleye that sits on a bed of maque choux, a classic Cajun recipe of corn and peppers. There’s also Midwest Cioppino, which has sea bass, shrimp and scallops.

Ode, which is downtown in Cherapa Place, has already started serving its Irish features for St. Patrick’s Day. Through March 18, diners at lunch and dinner will find corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, and Irish stew. And new this year, there’s an all-you-can-eat Irish buffet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 18. The dinner menu and Irish features will be served from 4 to 9 p.m.

Going all-in for the month that includes St. Patrick’s Day, the features for March have arrived at the Phillips Avenue Diner.

The tasting menus for March at Harvester Kitchen by Bryan are called Say Cheese!

There are plant-based and fish-and-meat versions.

The east-side Bagel Boy used its marquee sign to get a message to its neighbor across the street. “Will trade bagels for Shamrock Shakes” worked. McDonald’s brought over about a half-dozen shakes and got a baker’s dozen plus of bagels in return. After seeing a post about the trade on social media, the B&G Milkyway at Harmodon Park offered a similar trade for Avalanches. That’s in the works, B&G co-owner Andrew Gibbins said.

Oh My Cupcakes is celebrating National Pi Day on Tuesday with pie-inspired cupcakes. The “cupcake ninjas” are baking up French Silk, Banana Cream, Blue Ribbon Cherry and Boston Cream flavors.

The cupcake bakery’s Frosting Shots are available now at Zooks Coffee Bar in Tea, which works to source local treats for its coffee, tea and Buzzed drinkers.

Sassy Cakes by Ashly’s cupcakes, Grandma Bea’s monkey bread and more are back at Stacey’s Vintage-Art-Boutique at the Tea exit. Owner Ashly Nordmeyer, who lives in Pipestone, Minnesota, stopped baking last summer while she prepared to open a retail bakery in Pipestone. Now that it’s up and running, she’s bringing her baked goods to the Sioux Falls area once a week, restocking every Friday.

The traveling food truck On the Hook Fish & Chips will be back in Sioux Falls on Saturday. It will be serving its Alaskan-caught cod and fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the parking lot of Tractor Supply Co. on North Cliff Avenue.

Valentine Crush, the movie and the craft beer, are back. To mark the weeklong showing of the film at West Mall 7 Theatres that starts Friday, Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars has made another batch of the beer named after the movie, which was shot in Sioux Falls. The fruited, mixed-fermentation sour ale conditioned on Balaton and Montmorency cherries, Madagascar vanilla beans and Korintje cinnamon. Unlike the first version that appeared with the movie’s Sioux Falls premiere in January 2022, this one is not gluten-free. It’s available at the taproom, the Hy-Vee at 49th and Louise, and JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars.

Seasonal cocktail features with several fun names have arrived at JJ’s Bar in JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars. Offerings include Mr. Bendo Thinks He’s Jon Snow with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, St. Germaine Liqueur, fresh lemon juice, housemade simple syrup and muddle dragon fruit. There’s also Carrie’s Basil Gimlet, Jester’s Pot-O-Gold, Thinking of Spring, JJ’s Shamrock Lemonade, The Brad Palmer and JJ’s Big Ginger.

Glacial Lakes Distillery & Brewhouse has a new menu of featured drinks. There’s a Bacon Maple Old-Fashioned, Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Martini and more. Knowing that patio season is just around the corner after a long winter, Glacial Lakes has crafted six tropical cocktails to get people in the mood. Choose from Painkiller, Rum Runner, Pina Colada, Blue Lagoon, Rum Punch and Sun Seeker.
