Downtown shop expands candy offerings

Dec. 21, 2023

The new owners of a cotton candy shop are offering even more sweets.

Candy Cloud Factory now carries classic, novelty and popular candy brands like Slo Poke, Harry Potter Chocolate Frog and Nerds in addition to its handspun cotton candy and SDSU Ice Cream.

“We get calls every single day looking for candy and people stopping in, so we decided well, let’s just listen to the customer and see what happens,” said Holly Jorgenson, who owns the business with daughter Josie Layton and daughter-in-law Shannon Johnson.

“We’ve got room for more yet, but this is our first shot at it, and we’ll see if it sells, and we’ll definitely expand.”

The family members, who also own Intoxibakes, bought Candy Cloud Factory  at the end of September. It’s at 701 N. Phillips Ave., along the boardwalk of The Cascade apartment complex.

In addition to the shelves of name-brand candies, the new offerings include a few prepackaged bulk items like spiced gumdrops and Jordanian almonds.

“The saltwater taffy has already been a huge hit,” Jorgenson said. “We sell that by the pound. … Everybody’s so excited when they come in and see that.”

The shop carries locally grown Gaylen’s Homegrown Popcorn, and Jorgensen wants to bring in more local vendors, including someone who makes freeze-dried candy.

Before the Christmas rush, Intoxibakes, which is a few blocks south in the Jones421 Building, had been stocking Candy Cloud Factory with cake pops, and those will return likely with more nonboozy baked goods in the new year.

The shop will have a grand reopening in January. Follow it on Facebook for updates. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday in the winter.
