Restaurant Roundup: New Cheeks Tomato Plate, Christmas in July frozen treats, $1 Taco Bravos

Pizza Cheeks has added several items to the menu featuring local produce. The Cheeks Tomato Plate features local tomatoes, burrata, pistachio pesto, arugula and basil. The Steak Pizzaiola sandwich has tomato-braised short ribs with fresh mozzarella, peppers, onions, Parmesan and basil aioli. There’s also Pesto Pasta, Baked Ziti with Italian sausage and the Summer Veg House Pizza. The restaurant’s farm partners are Mary’s Kitchen & Gardens, Caselli’s Market Garden, Jensen Sweet Corn & Produce and Dakota Fresh Food Hub. In other changes, the Pick Two for $12 lunch special now includes wings.

There’s still time to celebrate Christmas in July at Polar Bites with flavors you might have been missing since the holidays. Side note: The seasonal shop is facing the woes of another road closure on 41st Street – now for eastbound traffic in addition to westbound. The easiest way to reach Polar Bites at 501 E. 41st St. is to drive south on Fourth Avenue.

Check out the seasonal specials at T.C.’s Referee Sports Bar & Grill. They’ll be available until around Labor Day.

If you haven’t experienced a hard shell taco wrapped in a flour tortilla with refried beans, this might be the time to try one. Get a Taco Bravo for $1 on Wednesday because Taco John’s is celebrating that USA Today readers named it the best fast-food taco. Limit of three.

Phillips Avenue Diner is basking in the glory of being the South Dakota pick for Food Network’s list of Classic Diners You Don’t Want To Miss, In All 50 States. Food Network highlighted the Elvis Waffle, Spicy G Burger, poutine and milkshakes. Read the entire list of diner picks here.

Yonutz is celebrating its grand opening Friday and Saturday with specials throughout the day. Friday: 2 and 7 p.m., 50 free mini doughnuts; 5 p.m., 50 free YoClawz arcade tokens. Saturday: 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., 50 free mini doughnuts; 3 p.m., 50 free arcade tokens; 7 to 9 p.m., BOGO Simply Smashed Donuts.

The Hello Hi is throwing an after-party with DJ GJ for the Headlights Theater farewell celebration Friday. The bar also has crafted a special drink that’s available now, with proceeds going to the group. Headlights Cocktail is Hornitos Tequila, guava, grapefruit and lime. The free final Headlights Theater show will be from 8 to 9:15 p.m. in the parking lot for Falls Park Farmers Market. RSVP for outdoor seating here.

Remedy Brewing Co. is celebrating its eighth anniversary Saturday with releases of Kickball, a Berliner Weisse that can be customized with 10 flavors; Fruited Jalespina, a Mexican lager with jalapeno, mango and pineapple; Stratcopter, a pineapple-packed Hazy IP; and another Hazy IPA, Blinker Fluid.

A special food menu for the Remedy celebration includes bourbon chislic, smoked baby back ribs, a pork Philly sandwich, a smoked salmon Caesar salad and all-beef or veggie hot dogs. The Brass Holes will play from noon to 2 p.m., with Starkmixx from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be a vendor fair from 1 to 5 p.m. and free play at Remedy Pickleball Pub. The party starts at 11:30 a.m.

Trio Jazz Club is having another after-party Saturday. Stop by from 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. for signature cocktails, arancini and fries for snacking and “disco house country” from DJ Mr. Wobbles. There’s a $10 cover charge.

It’s the annual Shark Week on Discovery Channel, and here are a few food and drink specials we noticed:
- Sugar Palace by Emily: Shark-themed cupcakes. Through Saturday.

- The Hello Hi: The specialty cocktail Boat Party comes in a shark mug with Swedish Fish and Sour Patch Kids for $9. “Jaws” will be playing on the TVs. Through Saturday.

- Ziggi’s Coffee: The dirty soda Bad Bruce features the frozen Bruce dirty soda base with strawberry boba, pomegranate syrup and a gummy shark topper. Through Sunday.

Get a free beer or well drink with a donation to Liebrary Bar’s back to school drive for families in need. Donations will be accepted from Friday through Aug. 15. Items will go to The Banquet and The Foster Network.

Mark your calendar: Miracle Treat Day is July 31 at DQ. At least $1 from every Blizzard sold will be donated to local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

Alibi Bar & Grill, Woody’s Pub & Grill and TommyJacks Pub, which are under the same ownership, and Roundhouse Brew Pub have started frying with beef tallow. Rendered beef fat is touted for its enhanced flavor and healthy fat profile.

Hot Orange Chicken is back for a limited time at Panda Express after a popular debut last year. It has six times more crushed chile than the original Orange Chicken and it also has the scorched chile that’s used in the chain’s Kung Pao Chicken.

Snack wraps have returned at McDonald’s after almost a decade. Chicken strips, shredded lettuce and cheese are wrapped in a tortilla with a choice of ranch or spicy sauce. They’re $2.99 each. There’s also a new limited-time Spicy Egg McMuffin.

Sonic Drive-In responded to McDonald’s news by noting that its Crispy Tender Wraps are “available tomorrow, and today, and yesterday, and only $1.99.” There are two options: Cheesy Baja and Honey Chipotle.

Arby’s now serves its spin on a cheesesteak. The Angus Cheesesteak has a quarter-pound of shaved beef, melted American cheese, diced bell peppers and onions, and a garlic spread on a toasted bun.

- With produce season starting to hit full stride, Cherry Rock Farms south of Brandon now has regular hours for the season: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
