Restaurant Roundup: Harry Potter cocktails, jambalaya special, holiday pop-up

Dec. 16, 2021

Fans of Harry Potter can gather Saturday night for a DaDa After Dark party. The bartenders have crafted Harry Potter-inspired cocktails, including butter beer, and “potions” such as Polyjuice, Veritaserum, and Amortentia. Several of them can be served without alcohol. The fun starts at 9 p.m. at DaDa Gastropub.

Leonardo’s Cafe in the Washington Pavilion is selling chef Omar Thornton’s signature jambalaya by the gallon for the holidays. It features andouille sausage, shrimp, chicken, rice, carrots, onions and celery in a thick seafood broth with a red wine reduction. Order by 10 a.m. Tuesday for pickup on Wednesday on Thursday.

Two catering chefs who share a kitchen are hosting their second annual holiday pop-up shop Saturday. Chef April Austin of Cakes and Confections by Chef April will have cookie decorating kits, snack mixes, treat boxes, cookie bars and hot cocoa bombs.  Chef Jeni Thomas of Dinner Birdie will have take-and-bake appetizers and meals and gift cards. They’ll also have handmade crafts from Julie Abraham. The shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3638 S. Southeastern Ave.

At least two restaurants are donating proceeds to relief efforts for tornado victims in Kentucky. Saturday, all proceeds from the lunch buffet at Sanaa’s 8th Street Gourmet will go to World Central Kitchen, which is providing meals on the ground, and the governor’s Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund. The Mediterranean restaurant serves its buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is asking for a minimum donation of $15. Chevys Fresh Mix is donating 20 percent of sales Monday to a relief fund established by the Untied Way of Southern Kentucky.

Now, the north side of Sioux Falls has easier access to Flyboy Donuts and Flyboy Coffee. They’re being served at Impact Alliance Coffee & Tea in the South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance on Russell Street.

Crooked Pint Ale House is having its annual ugly sweater contest through Friday. Stop in wearing your ugly sweater, get your photo taken for the Crooked Pint Facebook page, enjoy a free tap beer and share the photo. The post with the most likes by Dec. 27 will win a $100 gift card.

Food truck Taqueria Suyapa, which uses a parking lot along 271st Street in Tea as its base, is closing for the season Friday. It’s still taking orders, however, for family dinners for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Order until Dec. 20 by calling 605-400-1131. Where else can you get a roasted pig leg for the holidays?

Hecho Con Amor will be selling its signature QuesoBirria tacos, BirriaBurrito and BirriaPizza by the slice at Saturday’s vendor fair and family event at The Multi-Cultural Center. Owner Ashley Rocio started her catering business in April and hopes to have a food truck and eventually expand into a restaurant. Saturday’s event is from noon to 7 p.m. and also includes a visit from Mr. and Ms Claus from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Looking for new plant-based offerings? Zoup Eatery has two soups that use Impossible meat that’s made from plants. Options include Tuscan white bean and cheeseburger. The restaurant rotates offerings, but customers can check availability online.

Through the holidays, bring three cans of food with you to DaDa Gastropub for charity and get a free drink on your next visit.

Neighborhood bar Ken’s Korner also is giving away a free beer if you donate a clean blanket.

Safari Bar & Grill has a full liquor license, so these Christmas cocktails pack a punch. Try the Kissed Caramel Cider, Peppermint Bark Coffee or the Chocolate Rumpies.

Granite City Food & Brewery has two seasonal drinks: the Mistletoe Martini and the Yule Tide Mule, which is made with pomegranate juice.

If you’re a fan of Godfather’s Pizza, jars of its pizza sauce are available now at Walmart.
