Restaurant Roundup: Chick-fil-A catering, cinnamon rolls, free Thanksgiving dinners

Nov. 23, 2021

The new Chick-fil-A at Empire Place has added catering services. The menu includes chicken nuggets and strips, warm or cold grilled chicken sandwiches, wraps, sides, cookies, brownies and lemonade, tea and other drinks by the gallon. Trays come in a variety of sizes. Pickup and delivery is available. Stop in the store to place your order, call 605-275-1010, or order online.

Rudy M. Navarrete’s Tex-Mexican Catering will be serving tacos and more from 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday in December at Severance Brewing Co.

Fat Kid Filly’s is coming to Valley Springs. The business, which started last year as a food truck, is going to run the kitchen in the new On the Rocks. The menu will be similar to Fat Kid Saloon in Salem. There’s still remodeling work to be done, so they don’t have a timeline for opening.

Fans of the baked-fresh-daily bread at The Pickle Barrel will love this treat. The restaurant is making take-and-bake pans of cinnamon rolls for Thanksgiving. Get a pan of 12 rolls and handmade cream butter frosting for $20. Orders must be placed by noon Wednesday for pickup by 6 p.m. that night. If it’s successful, they’ll be offered again for Christmas.

Boss’ Pizza and Chicken is offering its annual free meal on Thanksgiving. Stop in from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the location at 2111 S. Minnesota Ave. for broasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and pie.

The Phoenix Lounge in Harrisburg is hosting its annual free dinner on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a tradition that has been going on for decades. Stop in at 4 p.m. for turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, scalloped corn, green bean casserole and dinner rolls. “Feel free to bring a dessert or something to share, but it’s certainly not required,” the bar said in a post on social media. “We really just want your presence!”

If you’re out shopping in the morning for Black Friday at The Empire Mall, Jacky’s Restaurant is opening early and serving breakfast. From 6 a.m. to noon, there will be a full breakfast menu, with breakfast burritos and sandwiches, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and Guatemalan breakfast dishes with refried black beans and plantains. Get a cup of coffee for $1.

Breakfast is returning this weekend to Squealer’s Smoke Shack in Tea. It will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

It’s time to brand beers. The Homestead Brew east of Sioux Falls is having its annual beer branding event from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Sticking a hot stainless steel rod in a beer caramelizes it and “changes the flavor into something new and spectacular.” Dress warm so you can stand by the fire for the branding, but you’ll be able to sit in the tasting room too. Snacks will be available.

Once a year, Queen City Bakery sells Thanksgiving Croissants, and they sell out within a couple of hours. They’ll be offered starting at 9 a.m. Sunday. There’s a limit of two per person, and no holds are available. The croissant is made with a thyme, celery seed and black pepper compound butter and filled with roasted turkey, gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce — all made from scratch, of course.

Changes in service, hours

Remodeling work at the three Qdoba locations continues. The project at 41st Street wrapped up earlier this week. The restaurant at 57th and Louise will be closed from Nov. 29 to Dec. 9 at the earliest and Dec. 12 at the latest, a manager said. The East 10th Street site will be closed for a few days sometime in January.

Harvester Kitchen by Bryan is adding dinner service on Tuesdays during December to help celebrate the holidays. Hours will be 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Watecha Bowl has added a few tables and chairs inside.

Falls Overlook Cafe has started winter hours. It’s open from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday. It’s serving homemade soup, hot chocolate, coffee, treats, wine and beer.
