Restaurant Roundup: Burger of the week, ice cream specials

Minervas is featuring a new burger every week for lunch. First up, through Saturday, is the Smokehouse Burger. A Hadrick Ranch premium Angus beef patty is topped with bacon, barbecue sauce, caramelized onions and gouda parmesan. It’s served with herb fries. Stensland Family Farms is hosting its annual I Pledge for Ice Cream event. Kids younger than 12 who recite the Pledge of Allegiance will get a free mini dip of ice cream through Sunday. The store will be closed on the Fourth of July.

La Plaza Fiesta has teamed up with El Chamoy to start offering ice cream for dessert. In addition to banana splits, offerings include ice cream by the scoop in a dish, waffle cone or waffle bowl.

The featured Avalanche for July at B&G Milkyway is Coffee Toffee with flavors of coffee, caramel and Heath candy bars.

Celebrate Wednesday’s opening of “Despicable Me 4” with a special treat at Cold Stone Creamery. The Mega Minion Marshmallow Meltdown Creation features Despicamallow ice cream – marshmallow ice cream turned Minion yellow – chocolate chips, marshmallows and sprinkles. It’s available for a limited time.

If you’re looking for locations of the Tasty Treats Ice Cream Truck that travels through neighborhoods, it has a new Facebook page.

The July Burger of the Month at Wileys is The SMAC Burger. It’s two smash patties seasoned with ancho chili rub, smashed in shaved onions, topped with American cheese, housemade SMAC sauce, hot honey, sliced fresh jalapenos and two strips of bacon on a brioche bun. Wileys will donate $1 for every burger sold to the Siouxland Recovery Fund to support organizations and nonprofits that are helping with flood recovery.

Every Monday in July, Blue Rock Bar & Grill is offering a free kids meal with the purchase of an adult entree.

The cafe in the Pinz bowling alley in Dell Rapids serves a free buffet for kids on Wednesday nights this month. The offer is good from 5 to 8 p.m. with an adult purchase. Options the first week included popcorn chicken, spaghetti with butter or red sauce with meatballs, fries, corn, fresh fruit, applesauce and chocolate pudding.

McDonald’s has a new $5 meal deal. Get a McChicken or a McDouble, along with a four-piece Chicken McNuggets, small fries and a drink.

Scooter’s Coffee has teamed up with Oreo for some of its new menu items this summer. There’s an Oreo Blender and Oreo Cake Bite. Other additions include the Electric Peach Infusion, Caramelicious Creme Cold Brew and S’mores Cookie. For a limited time, the red, white and blue Scoot Energy Sparkler Infusion is available.

The Cookie Jar Eatery has made it easier to order sack lunches for pickup or delivery. The menu and ordering are available online. Place orders at least one day in advance.

BB’s Pub is hosting the Big Dog Eating Contest on the Fourth of July. Other fun includes Pub Olympics, live music and a Kidney Foundation Happy Hour. Fifty percent of registration fees for the hot dog-eating contest will be donated to The Kidney Foundation to help aid families and fund continued research to improve the lives of those affected with kidney-related illnesses. Cash prizes will be awarded. The event begins at noon, and children are welcome until 9 p.m.

Ken’s Korner is hosting a potluck picnic for the Fourth of July. The bar will provide hamburgers and hot dogs. The bar is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the potluck will run from 1 to 5 p.m.

Purchase a Blizzard at the DQ Grill & Chill in Hartford on the Fourth of July, and the business will give $1 to help fund Midwest Honor Flight No. 21. Four Hartford veterans will be part of the all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

In last week’s roundup, we mentioned several restaurants and food trucks that were helping feed those affected by flooding. Here are a few more we noticed.
- Big Poppa’s Food Truck fed those in need and first responders in Rock Valley, Iowa, last week and in Canton this week and is headed to McCook Lake next week. Volunteers are needed and donations are being accepted. Find information on Big Poppa’s Facebook page.
- Salas Salsas hosted a taco feed Monday in Rock Valley.
- Rudy M. Navarrete’s Tex-Mexican Catering is teaming up with Rudy Navarrete’s restaurant in Sioux City for a fundraising meal with 100 percent of proceeds going to those in need in McCook Lake. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the restaurant, 2421 Riverside Blvd.
Changes in hours, service
- Chevys Fresh Mex is no longer serving a Sunday brunch buffet. It “will not be back for some time,” the restaurant posted on social media. The regular menu is available.
- Chef Lance’s on Phillips will be closed Thursday through Monday to give its staff a “much deserved vacation.”
- Baking up a Storm is closed through Tuesday for a family vacation.
