Restaurant Roundup: 2,250-cupcake order, Look’s patio shrimp boil

Oh My Cupcakes filled its biggest order earlier this month: 2,250 individually packaged cupcakes in two flavors and five colors of frosting. Owner Melissa Johnson and seven employees baked, decorated, packaged and delivered the treats in Sioux Falls, Huron, Watertown and Dakota Dunes for Premier Bankcard employees – in six “whirlwind” hours from start to finish but with “lots of strategy and advance planning by the team,” she said. Everything had to be delivered by 10 a.m. Aug. 2 so the company could celebrate its rebranding with its team. Premier also was the previous record holder with an order of 1,763 cupcakes earlier this year for staff members.

Look’s Marketplace is putting together a Back Patio Shrimp Boil on Sunday. The kitchen crew is cooking up a classic shrimp, sausage, potato and corn boil. The price is $25 for the boil and a glass of beer. Look’s Beer Co. will be pouring its Abe Foamin, a smoked all-malt flager. Drop by anytime from 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance.

Squealer’s Smoke Shack is helping parents celebrate the start of school by hosting a party beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, the first day of classes in Tea. There will be food and drink specials, and parents can play volleyball, bean bags, cup toss and jumbo jenga.

Not only is he a chef, but he’s also an opera singer. Gabriel Rivero, the owner of Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant, is known to sing occasionally for diners. Saturday, he’s having an opera night at the restaurant at Cliff and Benson beginning at 7 p.m. Julie Ostroot of Viborg will play classical and tango music on the piano, and Rivero will sing a couple of arias. Diners can make reservations. Get a preview of the chef’s singing on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Get a pint of beer for a pint of blood Friday at the Community Blood Bank’s annual blood drive at Remedy Brewing Co. Donors also get a free T-shirt. Hours are 1 to 5:30 p.m. Only a half-dozen spots remain on the signup sheet.

The Great Plains Cheese & Ice Cream Festival is back this year. The event at Strawbale Winery near Renner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday includes seven vendors: Dimock Dairy, Babybel, Kasemeister Creamery, Stensland Family Farms, SDSU Ice Cream Truck, Redhead Creamery and Blue Bunny Ice Cream. In addition, there will be kid-friendly food trucks and activities for children. DNR will provide the music. Tickets, which are cash-only, are $10 for adults and $2 for those 12 and younger. The event serves as a fundraiser for the Family Visitation Center and Sanford Health’s Camp Bring It On for pediatric cancer patients and survivors.

Unlimited tasting of specialty foods from local eateries is one of the draws for the annual Taste the Goodness fundraiser for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. The event is from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Avera office at 11th and First. In addition to food, there will be more than 100 craft beers, hand-picked wines and bourbons, along with a silent auction, music, games and activities. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased in advance.

Chef Ellen Doerr has started offering public classes, which were meant to be part of her new location at 69th and Western but were derailed by the pandemic. She’s offering them on Tuesday nights. Up next is Pasta 101. It begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Class size is limited to eight, and participants will be paired up to practice rolling out and cutting the pasta dough used for the bolognese sauce. The meal will include an Italian side salad and Zabaglione for dessert, which Doerr will demonstrate how to make. The price is $33. Pre-register to reserve a spot. Doerr will teach sushi rolling Aug. 24.

La Luna Cafe is hosting a latte art competition Aug. 19. Sixteen spots are available for competitors, and the first pour is at 6 p.m. Stop in early to get a special on pizzas. Buy one and get the second one for half-price from 3 to 5 p.m.

Tropical Sno is beginning to cut back its schedule as schools resume classes. Hours through August are 4 to 8 pm. Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The shaved ice trailer, which usually is based at 34th and Spring, is available for events and private bookings in September.
