Raven hosts Beat the Freeze drive

Oct. 16, 2019

As last week’s temperatures proved, it’s not too soon to start thinking about winter clothing needs.

Raven Industries Inc. is organizing an event Thursday to help.

The company will hold a Beat the Freeze clothing drive from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its downtown headquarters on Sixth Street east of Phillips Avenue.

It’s designed to provide warm clothing to clients of Family Visitation Center, The Banquet and Child’s Voice.

“We are so excited about our upcoming Beat the Freeze clothing drive and hope the community will support us,” said Margaret Carmody, director of organizational culture and communications.

“There are thousands of people in Sioux Falls living in poverty, struggling to pay their bills and support their families, and they are often unable to afford to purchase warm coats, hats, gloves and other necessary South Dakota winter gear. Raven is dedicated to giving back — ‘solving great challenges’ right at home — and contributions to Beat the Freeze will make a big impact in our community. Everything we collect will be distributed to those in need for free and will help our neighbors stay safe and warm this winter.”

Beat the Freeze will accept any new winter clothing items for children and adults, including:

  • Coats.
  • Hats and beanies.
  • Mittens and gloves.
  • Scarves and neck warmers.
  • Boots.
  • Snow pants.
  • Sweaters and sweatshirts.

The partner charities expressed a great need for the following items, which community members are encouraged donate:

  • Larger men’s coats that allow room for clothing underneath to be layered.
  • Items for children age 4 to 15.
  • Snow pants for children.

“The health effects of extreme cold can be life threatening,” Carmody said. “We hope that after this clothing drive, many people in Sioux Falls will be safe and protected this winter.”
