Preview JJ’s Axes & Ales, opening Wednesday

Oct. 9, 2018

JJ’s Axes & Ales opens Wednesday in the former location of JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars.

That store moved to a larger space at 3000 W. 57th St. earlier this year.

The former location, next to Starbucks on Western Avenue south of 57th, was converted to Axes & Ales.

It includes three ax-throwing courts with two lanes each. Each court can accommodate up to eight players.

“It’s very cool,” owner Tom Slattery said. “And it’s very simple. We’ll be slowly adding things, and once we get the coolers full of beer, it will be even better.”

The business will open with 12 beers on tap, including two retro beers “for those who need to get their PBR and Hamm’s fix,” Slattery said.

“The beer store component will open in the middle to end of October and include discounted case sales and potentially growler fills.”

An ax-throwing league will be held Thursday nights. Otherwise, ax-throwing is reserved by the hour and includes training plus supervised coaching throughout the experience.

“Walk-ins are discouraged because we don’t want you to have to wait for your time. So reservations are highly recommended,” Slattery said.

Make a reservation at jjsaxes.com.

Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 2  to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
