Posh owner launches mobile Western boutique

May 18, 2023

Posh Boutique owner Alyssa Nix combined her two loves — fashion and horses — in her latest business venture, The Posh Cowgirl.

Nix, who purchased the boutique at The Bridges at 57th in 2018, will launch The Posh Cowgirl this week. The mobile Western-themed boutique is a repurposed, decked-out equipment trailer.

“I’ve shown horses my whole life and always had my two passions, horses and fashion, and we had a long, kind of boring winter with all the snow storms. And I thought we needed something to stir up our creativity and get excited and refreshed, and we thought of that,” she said.

“Primarily I’ll be hauling it to rodeos and horse shows, but most of the people at these shows don’t have anywhere to shop. They live in the middle of nowhere. The other vendors there are tack or show clothing, and there’s no opportunity for regular nice women’s clothing.”

Nix often brings clothing from Posh boutique for friends to shop at horse shows, “and they shop out of my trailer, so I thought what if we could do that but bring a whole boutique?” she said.

The Posh Cowgirl will make its first stop May 20 in downtown Sioux Falls at the Remedy Brewing Co. Queen Bee Day from 1 to 5 p.m. The mobile boutique will blend Posh merchandise with Western apparel and accessories in sizes XS-3X.

“That trend is coming in really strong right now, so that’ll be nice for my in-town events that Western is on trend,” Nix said. “And long term, my demographic is people in the horse and Western world, so we get to capitalize on the mega-trend now and keep riding it out.”

The seven-by-16-foot trailer has been outfitted with steel racks and even a complete fitting room with a mirror and fan.

Merchandise includes clothing, jewelry and other accessories and handbags.

“It’s a true balance of Posh and Western, so it has a Western feel, but it’s not as shabby chic as you would maybe expect for a Western wear boutique,” Nix said.

She’ll post the schedule on social media and plans at least one more stop in Sioux Falls in August for a Food Truck Tuesday event at Golf Addiction. Otherwise, the schedule includes several rodeos and horse shows.

For now, The Posh Cowgirl won’t sell online.

“I think it’s really important for my demographic, which is mid-20s and over, to come in and try on clothes,” Nix said. “The whole reason I’m in retail is because of my love for people and love for fashion, so I like to work with them and make sure the pieces are fitting right and that I can find what they’re looking for.”
