POET is continuing its climb in the ranks of the largest U.S. container shippers, driven by increased export volumes in 2024.

Data from S&P’s Journal of Commerce now places POET at No. 15 on its top 100 U.S. container exporters, ahead of many well-known companies in the U.S. such as Tyson Foods, Walmart and DuPont. This rise in the rankings is now a trend; POET went from No. 36 in 2021 to No. 25 in 2022 and No. 17 in 2023 before reaching the top 15 for 2024.

“Our transportation logistics along with increased recognition of the POET Bioproducts brand as a quality international feed supplier continue to open doors for us worldwide,” said Greg Breukelman, president of POET Bioproducts.

“Our team can compete with the best in the world, and we’re showing that year after year.”

POET shipped 39,400 40-foot containers in 2024, an 18 percent increase compared with the previous year. The bulk of those shipments were animal feed ingredients like distiller’s dried grains with solubles and corn fermented protein.

“Biofuels and animal feed are two of South Dakota’s most important exports,” said Jesse Fonkert, president and CEO of South Dakota Trade. “POET has established itself as a world leader in production, sales and transportation of these vital products. That benefits not only our farmers and rural communities but all of South Dakota.”

POET has committed itself to building a global supply chain. In 2024, the company shipped containers to 25 countries, with notable growth in markets in Japan, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

The 2022 acquisition of POET Terminal – Savannah in Georgia dramatically improved POET’s shipping capabilities. In fact, last year, 40 percent of the company’s containers went through the Savannah terminal to be shipped to customers all over the globe.

“The POET Bioproducts team has become a leader in both national and international transport,” Breukleman said. “Every year, they set a new standard, and our customers more than anyone reap the benefits of that.”
