Plant-based food truck, catering service closes

July 9, 2024

A plant-based chef who closed her restaurant earlier this year now has shut down her food truck and catering business indefinitely.

“I hate doing it to my customers,” said Darcy Green, who started ‘Brosia Bowl as a meal-delivery service in 2019. She added the food truck in 2021 and expanded as a restaurant in August 2022. “It has been too many days of tears, too many nights waking up at 2 a.m. worrying about bills.”

The year-and-a-half of operating the restaurant in the Jones421 Building downtown “buried me,” Green said.

“I have a lot of financial burden on my head right now. I had to go find another job to pay the bills.”

She noted that the rainy weather hasn’t helped food truck outings, and she questioned the support for her business, which focused on vegan and vegetarian salads, grain bowls, sandwiches and wraps.

“People are struggling right now in every aspect. It’s very sad.”

‘Brosia Bowl became part of the Falls Park Farmers Market in 2022 and recently had started taking pre-orders of grab-and-go meals, juices and smoothies for shoppers’ convenience and planning purposes.

Green isn’t putting the food truck up for sale though; “I can’t even bear the thought,” she said.

“I’m not kidding. I am going to try again someday. This is just what’s best for my health and mental health right now.”

For now, she’s working at the Sioux Falls Family YMCA in a temporary position, helping feed kids lunch during the week. She’s looking for another job preparing food, noting she also has experience in catering and events.

To her customers, she wanted to say: “Thank you for having faith in me and supporting me and to be on the lookout (for my return.)”
