Permanent jewelry studio opens downtown

Aug. 25, 2023

A new business offering custom jewelry designed not be removed daily has opened in downtown Sioux Falls.

The Midnight Spark Permanent Jewelry Studio is located within Nordic Hall, 218 W. 13th St., and opened in the physical space recently after launching last fall through events, pop-ups and private parties.

Owner Caitlin Moen discovered permanent jewelry on vacation after commenting on a woman’s bracelet.

“She said she got it welded on her onto her wrist in a shop in New York,” Moen said. “I was very intrigued.”

Several months later, she decided to try it for herself. It led her to consider beginning a business.

“The next day, I purchased the very expensive welder and ordered supplies,” she said.

“I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit but didn’t want to just sell something. Permanent jewelry is more than a product; it is an experience.”

Some customer choose it for a minimalist look and custom fit, while others opt for pieces to mark milestones or other events of significance.

“I was consistently being asked, ‘Do you have a storefront and can I make an appointment?'” Moen said. “Sadly, I had to decline or ask the customer to wait until our next event. I wanted to change that and go full time in order to better serve our clients.”

Permanent jewelry offered includes necklaces, rings, anklets and bracelets, which are the most popular. The ends of the pieces are welded together with a small jump ring instead of a clasp. Clients can choose from sterling silver or yellow or rose gold-filled pieces. They also can select charms or connector pieces to further customize.

“You are getting a piece that is custom fit to your body,” Moen said. “It’s great for those who do not want to take jewelry on and off. … We use high-quality materials meant to last. The jewelry can actually be safe without a clasp that can easily be snagged.”

Jewelry can be cut at home by severing the jump ring and placing it in an air-tight bag for a future reweld. Or, a clasp can be added upfront for easier removal.

The studio “is going well so far, but I am still working on getting the word out,” Moen said. “We are really enjoying the space.”

Nordic Hall is home to other businesses, including art studios, a salon, photographer, vintage-clothing boutique, recording studio and cellphone shop.

“Everyone in the building has been really welcoming,” Moen said. “I have a special love for downtown and have considered it my home, and I have always lived within a mile or two of it.”

Midnight Spark is open for in-studio appointments from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday as well as Friday and from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday. There are several events planned, including a grand opening, ladies’ night and Taylor Swift-themed event.
