Rebecca Hoey

Dr. Rebecca Hoey will be the new provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs at Dakota State University. Hoey’s experience includes many years at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, including serving as dean of the graduate school and adult learning. Her most recent position was associate vice president of academic programming with the South Dakota Board of Regents. Hoey is a graduate of Wayne State College with a bachelor’s degree in education; she has a master’s degree in education from St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota; and earned an Ed.D. from USD in curriculum and instruction. She will begin her duties June 22.

Dana Wohlwend has joined Alternative HR as a support services specialist. Wohlwend has previous human resources and benefits experience, as well as several years of education, training and teaching experience with Kilian Community College and Southeast Technical College. She taught a range of classes, including business, computer and accounting. Wohlwend also is an entrepreneur and has been the owner, operator and promotor of Sioux Falls Food Tours for the past few years.

New directors have been elected to the board of Downtown Sioux Falls Inc.: Vernon Brown of  SDN Communications and Micki Lundin of Avera Health.

The South Dakota State Medical Association has elected officers for its board of directors: president, Dr. Lucio Margallo II, Avera Medical Group Mitchell; president-elect, Dr. Denise Hanisch; vice president, Dr. Jennifer Tinguely; secretary-treasurer, Dr. Susan Anderson; and immediate past president, Dr. Kara Dahl. Other members of the board are at-large directors, Drs. Mark Ballard, Lisa Brown and Keith  Hansen; policy council chair, Dr. Heather Preuss; delegates to the American Medical Association, Drs. Mary Carpenter and Robert Allison; and alternate delegate, Dr. Robert Summerer.

The South Dakota State Medical Association has presented its annual awards.

Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Tom Huber.

Outstanding Young Physician Award: Dr. Mandi Greenway Bietz.

Community Service Award: Dr. David Basel.

Richard P. Holm, MD, Media Award: The Prairie Docs – Drs. Andrew Ellsworth, Kelly Evans-Hullinger, Debra Johnston and Jill Kruse.

Young at Heart Award: Dr. Laurie Landeen.

Past President’s Award: Dr. Benjamin Aaker.

Special Presidential Award: Dr. Mary Carpenter.

Friend of Medicine Award: Dr. Blake Curd.

COPIC Humanitarian Award: Dr. Tim Irwin.

Six physicians were recognized with the 50-Year Award for medical practice in South Dakota: Drs. Frank Alvine, Bernie Hanson, Donald Kelley, Thomas Looby, Michael Pekas and John Sabow.
