Three Sanford Health leaders have been invited to be panelists at the Becker’s Hospital Review 12th Annual Meeting April 25-28 in Chicago, joining executives from the nation’s top health systems.

Erica DeBoer, RN, MA, CCRN-K, CN, chief nursing officer; Dr. Jeremy Cauwels, chief physician; and Dr. Luis Garcia, president of the clinic division; will participate in panel discussions covering some of the most pressing issues facing hospitals and health systems today.

DeBoer is one of three speakers on a panel discussion entitled “How to Make Every Nurse the Best Nurse at Your Hospital.” It will be moderated by Scott Becker, JD, founder, Becker’s Healthcare, and includes nursing leaders from Children’s Mercy and WellStar Health System.

DeBoer is also a panelist for a discussion on the topic of nurse bullying. The conversation will be moderated by Brian Zimmerman at Becker’s Healthcare and includes nursing leaders from Advocate Aurora Health and Ohio County Healthcare.

Staff support, patient access

Sanford Health has several innovative nursing initiatives that are empowering nurses to do their most fulfilling work, including using predictive analytics to manage clinical staffing, leveraging technology to support patients at the bedside and automating workflows to build a more resilient workforce and improve patient care.

“Setting our nurses up for success and prioritizing their well-being are two of the most important topics in our hospitals and clinics today,” DeBoer said. “I look forward to sharing my experiences and hearing from other nursing leaders about how we can support the people who give so much to our patients.”

Cauwels is one of five speakers scheduled to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Telehealth 2.0: What the Next Iteration of Health System Digital Strategy Looks Like.” It will be moderated by Katie Adams, a reporter for Becker’s Hospital Review. Cauwels will be joined by leaders from CommonSpirit Health, UNC Healthcare, UPMC and Sutter Health.

Sanford Health announced a landmark $350 million virtual care initiative last year to transform health care for rural and underserved communities across the Midwest by significantly improving access to convenient, high-quality health care and ensuring that patients benefit from world-class care, no matter where they live or the health challenges they face.

Cauwels is also a panelist for a discussion on improving patient safety and quality. The panel will be moderated by Alan Condon, managing editor of Becker’s ASC Review and Becker’s Spine Review. Joining Cauwels on the panel will be clinical experts from Hartford Healthcare, Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford Health Care.

“We are leading the way when it comes to leveraging technology to provide our patients with the best care, whether they live in a city or in a rural area,” Cauwels said. “These speaking opportunities give us a chance to share our vision for shaping the future of care delivery in rural America.”

Health care worker resilience

Garcia will join a four-person panel on employee resilience and well-being. The discussion will be moderated by Erica Cabajal, a writer for Becker’s Hospital Review. Garcia will be joined by executives from Fairview Park Hospital, University Medical Center New Orleans and HonorHealth.

The American Medical Association honored Sanford Health as a recipient of the 2021 Joy in Medicine, one of 44 health systems recognized for their commitment to health care well-being and programs to combat work-related stress and burnout. The health system has a comprehensive strategy to support the well-being of caregivers and promote awareness and prevention of mental health issues.

“Today’s health care leaders are facing new challenges, and not all of those are directly tied to the pandemic,” Garcia said. “We need to be able to respond to the next generation’s health care preferences and at the same time recognize how important it is to support our clinicians’ well-being.”
