Visitors to this weekend’s Spring Parade of Homes will find dozens available to tour — including a featured home with plenty of eye-catching design.
“We had a really strong response from builders, so we’re excited to offer the chance to tour more than 70 homes from 40 different builders,” said Cory Hjellming, vice president of Hjellming Construction.
“The interest is as high as it’s ever been.”
The Spring Parade of Homes from the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire enters its second weekend May 18-19 from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. The footprint of the parade has expanded from Sioux Falls to Brandon, Harrisburg, Tea, Baltic, Garretson and Lake Madison. Some homes also offer virtual tours.
A number of homes on the Parade have been built without a buyer and are available for sale, Hjellming said.
His company built the event’s featured home, a four-bedroom, six-bath custom house at 5604 E. Chandler Drive in northeast Sioux Falls.
The home features distinct design elements, including “rustic oak flooring throughout, rustic oak beams and a lot of elaborate wallpaper, from suede to floral,” Hjellming said. “The light fixtures you just have to see because they’re hard to even describe.”
The living room features a large gas fireplace, custom tile and standout wallpaper.
“Definitely, wallpaper is coming back,” Hjellming said. “We almost put wallpaper up in every new project we do now, so that’s coming back.”
Each bedroom in the home is designed as a suite with its own bath and walk-in closet.
“And then downstairs is a really large family room that we carried the rustic oak floor into along with a linear electric fireplace,” Hjellming said. “It doesn’t look very grandiose from the outside, but once you get in it’s really cool.”
The backyard features a 30-by-60-foot sport court that the family plans to convert to a hockey rink in the winter.
In working with buyers, there aren’t any major trends emerging, but there are some unique additions that are becoming more common, including electric vehicle charging stations and bidets, he said.
“We’re all likely slower on the new home starts, but remodels and additions have been really going like mad,” Hjellming said. “We’ve gotten a lot of calls for those, and that tends to be how the market moves. New homes slow down, and remodels kick back up, and we do both, so it keeps us busy.”
The Spring Parade of Homes is a free event, although there is a $5 donation to tour the featured home.
