Onions sold at Hy-Vee part of nationwide recall

Oct. 22, 2021

Hy-Vee is alerting customers that onions it sold in mid- to late August are part of a nationwide recall.

The grocery store chain received a shipment from Capital City Fruit that included onions linked to a multistate outbreak of salmonella.

The affected products sold at Hy-Vee stores were 3-pound bags of yellow onions available for purchase from Aug. 13 to Sept. 1.

The nationwide Food & Drug Administration advisory includes red, yellow and white onions recalled by ProSource Produce or supplied by Keeler Family Farms that we imported from Mexico. The affected onions were distributed to restaurants, food service locations and retail and grocery stores.

Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever. Most people infected with salmonella will begin to develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness, salmonellosis, usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.

According to a map from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, six to 10 people in South Dakota have become ill. Across the U.S., 652 people have become sick, and 129 of them have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

According to Hy-Vee’s news release, “The affected onions are no longer available at any Hy-Vee stores; however, consumers may have product remaining in storage or freezers, or in canned or frozen goods produced with the affected onions. Out of an abundance of caution, Hy-Vee advises consumers to discard any affected product or return the product to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.”

Additional information on the recall is available on the Food & Drug Administration’s page.
