One-man coffee mission brings small-batch roasts to your door

Jan. 15, 2019

Tyler Soria has turned his interest in coffee and roasting beans for himself and his friends into a small business.

The Airos Coffee Co. – “Airos” is “Soria” spelled backward – sells 12-ounce bags of ground or whole bean coffee online. Soria delivers orders in the Sioux Falls area himself within a day’s time.

For now, Soria is using a 1-pound roaster in his house, but he plans to buy a commercial-sized roaster soon.

“My five-year plan is to really establish customers around the city and really the nation … and get a coffee shop and be involved in that area.”

Soria buys his coffee beans from wholesale vendors in Iowa, Minnesota and Texas.

“I just kind of go all over the place,” he said. “It’s whomever I can build a relationship with.”

The beans come from countries such as Ethiopia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, and the offerings on the website change frequently. He also sells green beans so other do-it-yourself types can roast their own.

“All of our coffee is specialty coffee, meaning it’s the highest rated coffee beans for multiple factors when graded.”

Customer demand for decaf coffee led him to find a Mexican product that is processed with mountain water rather than chemicals. “That’s definitely a big seller for me as well.”

Most of his customers are individuals, but he’s hoping to expand and become a supplier for restaurants and other businesses that sell coffee.

Soria started Airos with beans but is turning his website – airoscoffeeco.com – into a one-stop shop for coffee making and will carry product such as grinders, filters and brewing machines.

The business is a part-time venture for now, “but I’m optimistic it will be full time before long.” For the past 12 years, he has worked for a logistics company.

“This is another part where it fit in well for me,” he said of his background and experience. “I understand people’s wants and needs when it comes to delivery.”

He enjoys delivering the coffee bean orders because it gives him a chance to interact with customers and makes him feel part of the community. That’s another reason he hopes to have a coffee shop soon.

“I’m a big supporter of Sioux Falls,” he said. “I was born and raised here. I love this community and want to be a part of it.”
