Nick’s Gyros to add east-side location

Dec. 4, 2025

A longtime Greek restaurant in Sioux Falls is expanding to the east side.

Nick’s Gyros is taking over the former Caribou Coffee building at 3501 E. 10th St. The coffee shop closed in August 2024.

The restaurant plans to begin remodeling in January, with an expected opening in May.

Owner Kosta Sengos said he was always thinking about expanding but wasn’t ready to pull the trigger, knowing it’s a lot of work.

“I was driving by this east-side location awhile back, saw it was for sale and thought to myself this could be an opportunity,” he said.

He jumped on that opportunity and has received lots of positive feedback since.

“I’m humbled and excited about it.”

Sengos’ father, Andy, who moved to the U.S. from Greece as a young man, started Nick’s in 1982 in The Empire Mall. A couple of years later, he moved the restaurant across Louise Avenue to the New Town Mall — now Empire East — and then to its home at 1512 W. 41st St. in the early 1990s. Andy Sengos retired in 2014 and handed the business over to Kosta, while continuing to keep up the landscaping, move snow and work a few lunch hours.

With 43 years in business, Nick’s is the defining standard for gyros in Sioux Falls. The gyro meat is a mixture of 90 percent beef and 10 percent lamb that’s shaved to order from the traditional vertical cone and grilled. Nick’s makes its own tatziki sauce, which Sengos said in a 2020 interview is the key to the popular Greek sandwich.

Other customer favorites are the french fries, cheeseburgers and baklava, he said.

“This isn’t a new concept trying to break in,” said Wayne Huber, a broker associate at Lloyd Cos. who represented Nick’s Gyros.

“It’s a trusted neighborhood restaurant that has proven itself year after year. Bringing that legacy to a new part of the city is exciting. It adds another dining option to the east side and continues a great success story for a family-run business.”
