New west-side taqueria features flavors of Michoacan to go

Aug. 23, 2023

A west-side express taqueria opens today.

Taqueria Los Primos at 807 S. Marion Road is the creation of the family that owns Mi Casa Latina Mexican Store next door.

“The food is going to be pretty similar to other restaurants. It’s tacos, burritos, but we’re going to try to put our own flavor, different sauce, different experience,” family member Alberto Carranza said.

Initially, the family planned to start with a simple express menu of tacos and burritos, but deciding to take advantage of the large kitchen, that has grown while still keeping a quick, to-go format, he said.

“What we’re doing is typical food from our country, Michoacan in Mexico. We’re going to have tacos, burritos, tortas, sopes, posole, menudo, caldo de res, caldo de camaron, which is all seafood, a seafood soup.”

Among the other seafood dishes are mojarra dorado, which is a whole fried fish, and ceviche tostadas. The expanded menu includes fajitas with shrimp, chicken and beef or all three.

Meat choices for the tacos include asada, birria, lengua, cabeza, adobada, carnitas, chorizo and marinated chicken.

“Asada, that’s going to be a little bit different from other restaurants,” Carranza said. “We’re going to marinate it with a homestyle sauce.”

One of the tortas, or sandwiches, is the Hamburgesa Estilo Los Primos, similar to what you’d find in Zamora in Michocan, which is west of Mexico City. It’s a beef patty topped with sausage, bacon and pineapple.

A kids menu offers chicken nuggets, a burrito, cheeseburger and quesadilla – all with fries.

Drink offerings include housemade horchata, jamaica and tamarindo, and bottles of Jarritos and Mexican Coke.

The focus of Taqueria Los Primos is offering convenience to busy workers and families. They’ll be able to get good food in less than five minutes, Carranza said.

The taqueria will open at 10:30 a.m. daily, closing at 8:30 p.m. every day except for Sunday when it will close at 6:30 p.m.
