Discounts are emptying shelves at Hy-Vee store closing Saturday

Dec. 30, 2021

The shelves are almost empty at the Hy-Vee store at 10th and Kiwanis that’s closing Saturday.

The groceries that remain since discounted sales began have been moved to the ends of the aisles.

The Iowa-based grocer announced at the beginning of the month that it was closing the store.

“The proposed plan is to have that location assist with preparing some of our bakery items and another section of that location assisting with pharmacy fulfillment,” spokeswoman Tina Potthoff said at the time.

General grocery items are being sold at 20 percent off. Other categories range from 10 percent off fresh meat and 15 percent off dairy to 20 percent off wine and spirits, and 50 percent off health and beauty products. A small refrigerated case of hams is marked at 50 percent off in addition to the 10 percent discount for fresh meat.

The meat department, bakery, deli, kitchen and pharmacy areas are still open.

Prescriptions will be transferred to the Hy-Vee on Minnesota Avenue or the customers’ choice of pharmacies.

The 132 employees at the grocery store — 37 full-timers and 95 part-timers — will be able to transfer to comparable positions at Hy-Vee locations in the area, the company said earlier this month. There are six other stores in Sioux Falls.

The store closes at 6 p.m. Saturday.
