New discount store opens with ‘bit of everything’

July 6, 2023

When Diana Navas and Victor Diaz opened the door of their new discount store at noon today, they greeted customers who had been waiting for as long as 30 minutes.

The wife and husband take that as a good sign that the decision to move from an online business model to a brick-and-mortar store was the right one.

Bit of Everything Discount Store lived up to its name on opening day and will continue to do so in the future, Diaz said. In fact, they have a warehouse with items that won’t fit into their new space next to the Ruby Tuesday restaurant at 2425 S. Shirley Ave.

“We have a lot of furniture in our warehouse up north but limited space,” Diaz said.

Destiny Ivanchuk, who lives near Sioux Falls, was browsing the Bit of Everything shelves within the first 20 minutes of its opening. She walked out with a couple pairs of sunglasses. One was minus a small screw, but that could be easily repaired, she said.

“They’re a dollar,” she said. “For a dollar, my husband can fix them.”

Ivanchuk enjoys shopping at discount stores. Some of the lure is the chance to get a good bargain. Another factor is curiosity — a customer never knows what might be awaiting on a shelf.

At Bit of Everything, customers can find candles and staplers, gifts bags and mattress pads, towels and Scrubbing Bubbles, blue jeans and bras, and toys and treats. There are chairs, false eyelashes, kitchen appliances, backpacks and headsets.

“We’ll try to change inventory every two weeks and update things,” Navas said.

Son Zackery Diaz was busy posting signs and moving merchandise on opening day.

BOE purchases pallets of items from companies such as Target and Home Depot, Navas said.

Navas and Diaz moved to Sioux Falls 22 years ago. They started their business last year, patterning it after one that Diaz’s parents operate in Las Vegas. During the COVID pandemic, when it was difficult to shop in person, offering items online on sites like eBay made it easier for customers, Navas said.

Hours at the store are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, noon to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 1 to 8 p.m. Saturdays. It will be closed Sundays and Mondays to allow the family to restock.
