New ‘Americanized’ ethnic restaurants open on 41st Street

Feb. 7, 2018

Tawooki Mediterranean Chop Chop has opened at 3101 W. 41st St. in the same retail center at Fuddruckers.

The restaurant is envisioned as a mini food court with an international flair, and the plan is to serve as a training ground for refugees and immigrants, especially those from the Middle East.

Local restauranteur Ted Hamze helped start Tawooki. He operates Zaroty Pizza Kitchen at Marion Road and 41st Street and will serve as a volunteer manager. Sarah Noam, an Iraqi immigrant, will be the trainer.

Tawooki will serve items such as gyros, kafta kebabs, chicken tawook, chicken shawarma and falafel. The meals will come as wraps, burritos and rice bowls.

The menu also includes pizzas and pockets similar to calzones with heavy Mediterranean influences as well as baked pasta dishes.

Winter hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with Sunday reserved for parties and groups.
