Montrose restaurant to close, but catering to continue

Aug. 2, 2018

The owners of CJ’s at the Wellington in Montrose are closing the restaurant but will continue to do catering out of the building and serve dinners there for special events.

The restaurant’s final meals will be served Aug. 11.

“We’ll be still in the area,” said Cole Sivertson, who owns the business with his mom, Connie. “The market’s not good to have a five-day-a-week restaurant.”

The two opened CJ’s in April 2017. Initially, Connie Sivertson was looking for a commercial kitchen to start a catering business when she found the former bank building in Montrose.

“I had never thought of running a restaurant before,” she said in a May interview, but the building’s charm convinced her that it needed to be used for more than just the kitchen. She and her son leased the space and started CJ’s, serving dinner standards such as hamburgers, chicken fingers and steak and daily specials such as Reubens, pot roast and grilled salmon.

In mid-July, they stopped serving dinner on Mondays.

The closing of the restaurant brings Connie Sivertson back to her initial plan. In addition to meals, the catering service will feature her cheesecakes, cakes and pies, which she enjoys baking and offered for free with dinner some nights.

Through Aug. 11, the restaurant will be open from 4:30 to 9 p.m. except for Saturday, when there’s a private party, and Sunday and Monday.
