The mobile coffee truck Roaming Grounds has added a permanent location in Dell Rapids.

Owner Becky Sehr is leasing space in a west-side retail center at 513 W. Fourth St. It’s a drive-thru-only operation but features all the hand-crafted espresso drinks, smoothies and Lotus energy drinks that have been drawing customers for the past two years.

“It’s been an adventure,” Sehr said of growing the business. When she started with her converted passenger bus, she spent at least two days of the week in Dell Rapids, one day in Crooks and one day in Colton, and frequently was in the Dell Rapids grocery store’s parking lot on the weekends.

Those out-of-town routes aren’t going away. Sehr has hired an employee to work at the brick-and-mortar location so she can continue to serve customers in Crooks on Wednesdays and in Colton on Fridays. She also usually stops by the Baltic school and a couple of child care businesses on Wednesdays after she’s done in Crooks.

“Consistency is key,” she said to ensuring that customers can find Roaming Grounds. “I pulled up to Colton the other day and had someone waiting for me. I’m getting lots of support.”

Now that she has the permanent location, she’ll add more events like weddings to the mobile schedule.

The drive-thru has more space for inventory than the bus, so it also serves dirty sodas and Munchy Mix, a combination of cereals, M&M’s and peanuts. Sehr is planning to add online ordering to the Roaming Grounds website and would like to offer delivery in Dell Rapids for people who can’t leave work.

Sehr said she might add a table and chairs outside the drive-thru when the weather is nice, but “we really lean into that quick caffeine. … There are places downtown to go sit and have coffee. They’ve done a really good job of creating their kid spaces and stuff.”

Hours at the Dell Rapids drive-thru are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.
