Abelardo’s Mexican Fresh at 1200 S. Minnesota Ave. has closed.

The restaurant had been closed temporarily because of staffing, but now it’s permanently shut down, according to Abelardo Gonzalez, who opened the restaurant in March 2019.

Gonzalez started the first Abelardo’s in Omaha in 2001. When the restaurant in Sioux Falls opened, it was the 18th location and the first in South Dakota. Some were owned by Gonzalez and others by his siblings.

According to the Abelardo’s website, now there are 22 locations, mostly in the Omaha and Des Moines areas, with three in Missouri and one in Oklahoma.
