A new downtown Mexican ice cream shop will satisfy sweet and savory cravings.

El Chamoy opened today with a freezer case full of tubs of homemade ice cream in 20 flavors and colorful paletas, or popsicles, made with tropical fruits and others that are ice-cream based.

The menu includes fruit bowls like the bionico with yogurt and granola, and the pina loca, or crazy pineapple.

There are drinks like raspados, which is flavored shaved ice, and mangonada with frozen mango and chamoy, which is a Mexican condiment made with dehydrated fruit, chili powder, salt, sugar and citrus juice.

For savory snacking, there are Flamin’ Hot Cheetos with queso and other chips with fruit or veggies. There are Mexican street foods like elote, chicarron preparado and salchipulpos.

“They’ll definitely not leave empty-handed,” said Isabel Diaz, who owns the business with Veronica Limon. In 2017, Limon started a Mexican ice cream shop in South Sioux City, Nebraska. She’s married to Diaz’ uncle, Rigoberto Delgadillo, the face on El Chamoy’s logo. Diaz moved to Sioux Falls from Dallas to open the ice cream shop.

“This is super good,” Diaz said of the ice cream her relatives make in South Sioux City. “I never had this type of ice cream before either, but in Dallas they have a lot of fruit shops, a lot of ice cream shops, but they’ve never tasted this good.”

Her family is working at the shop to help her get started, and she’s planning to hire staff.

El Chamoy is at 523 W. 10th St. and is open from noon to 9 p.m. daily.
