Maker’s work encompasses blend of her family, future generations of artists and self

Dec. 2, 2025

There’s no denying art runs through Courtney Hart’s veins.

She started a business after she graduated with a fine arts degree from USD in 2018.

“Although it’s gone through a few names and iterations, Hart Studio Arts feels like a name and something that encompasses not only my creations but also me, my little family and any generations of makers that I may pass the business onto someday,” Hart said.

Hart Studio Arts features ceramic arts and other materials, including fiber, textiles and mixed media. Her work evokes a rugged sense of the natural world, inspired by nature, geologic rock, land formations, effects of the passage of time, and personal experiences.

Hart will feature her work at the 605 Made Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Cherapa Place in downtown Sioux Falls.

This will be the first time Hart Studio Arts has participated in a 605 Made Market.

She will feature her ceramic wares and a few fiber pieces ranging in price from $10 to $50.

“In many ways, I view my work as a reflection of self, personality and values,” she added.

Hart’s passion stems heavily from her family, where art and creating run deep.

“I grew up watching my mom create beautiful stained glass pieces, my dad building and renovating things around the house – particularly woodworking and wood furniture pieces – my aunt a quilter and my grandmother a sewer,” Hart explained.

“Growing up and seeing all these things being created out of all of these different materials nourished a fascination that not only could I create beautiful things, but also beautiful functional things.”

Hart’s work is inspired and influenced by the natural wonders of the world.

“As a child, I was fascinated by collecting all the little trinkets of nature like acorns, leaves, rocks,” she said. “I think art really comes down to all the beautiful little trinkets you collect along the way. Each piece is carefully collected based upon the collector’s eye for what they find special about that piece.”

She said she enjoys local art markets like the 605 Made Holiday Market because they facilitate a special kind of community.

“They bring together creators and curious collectors in a unique environment where we all get to learn a little more about our neighbors, ask about unique art processes, share stories and foster new relationships that will hopefully inspire new wonder in both artists and art enthusiasts.”

Hart will be among more than 50 makers in this year’s 605 Made Holiday Market, which will take place in the lower-level parking garage of the original Cherapa Place building, which is on the east side of the Big Sioux River between Sixth and Eighth streets. It will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
