Longtime pub to relocate in growing northwest

Dec. 14, 2022

A longtime bar and grill near The Empire Mall is moving to the northwest side of town.

BB’s Pub N Grill’s final day at 3400 W. 49th St. will be Dec. 31, said Ethan Harvey, one of its managers and a grandson of owner Dave Birger.

It’s expected to reopen in mid- to late January in a first-floor commercial space in one of the apartment buildings at University Hills Village along Marion Road.

That will be a temporary home until the new building it will occupy nearby is constructed. The final home at 5400 W. University Trail – just north of the apartment complex – will have 10,000 square feet and include a liquor store.

“By spring of 2024, we should have the new building up and going,” Harvey said. “That construction will start in a couple of months.”

For its temporary home at 5520 W. Success St., Suite 100, BB’s is getting a new name: Credo’s Pub. Harvey said “Credo,” which is a statement of beliefs that guide someone’s actions, was in the running when his grandfather wanted to rename the bar – then called Nutty’s Pub – several years after he bought it.

BB’s has a six-page menu but is best known for its burgers, pizzas and broasted chicken, Harvey said.

The menu will shrink for the temporary home, and “we’ll push the pizzas and broasted chicken out there.”

Up until recently, the bar on 49th Street, which Harvey considers a “hidden gem,” had 56 tap lines for beer, and Credo’s will carry on that legacy with 36 draft beers. It will continue to feature a mix of domestic beers and local and regional craft brews, along with its full liquor license. BB’s also is known for Fogies Beer School, which features a different brewery every week. Those probably will resume at Credo’s after a few months, Harvey said.

And Credo’s Pub is expected to be there for at least three years after the new BB’s opens, Harvey said. The full liquor license would transfer to the new home.

The new 10,000-square-foot building will have room for more than 250 customers, he said. The current space has a maximum capacity of 180. Harvey called the new patio “major” and said it likely will have room for 50 people.

The liquor store will have its own entrance and access from the bar.

On the final day, BB’s will have to say goodbye to its customers before the new year begins, Harvey said. The liquor license for the location expires that day, so the final call will be well before midnight.
