Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Online discount store BOE is moving into a storefront. The locally owned business expects to open soon in the former Stride Rite space at 2425 S. Shirley Ave. BOE stands for Bit of Everything and sells items like house decor, furniture, clothing and toys.

Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Gifts is closing this month with the retirement of owners Dick and Sandy Murphy.

L.G. Everist is building a ready-mix plant at the southeast corner of the Interstate 29 interchange for Harrisburg. It’s part of a broader plan for 50 acres that could include an asphalt plant and recycling yard.

A baker who sells his cupcakes, kolaches and more at the Lake Lorraine Farmers Market has chosen the west-side development for his first storefront. Alex Peterson is opening Baking up a Storm inside The Blu on Lorraine, a six-story apartment building that soon will be home to residents. He’s hoping to open in late July or early August.

Best friends who started a cleaning company five years ago have started a second business together. This time, Betty Face and Jennie Lemieux are on the road with their mobile coffee shop, Get’Cha Coffee. They also serve pastries and plan to expand the breakfast menu. They’re doing pop-ups at businesses and appearing at events. The trailer also is available for private gatherings.

Taichi Bubble Tea has opened at Empire Place. The locally owned franchise also serves other beverages, ramen and sushi. It’s open daily in the retail center at 4107 W. 41st St.

Smoothie King has opened next to Taichi at Empire Place. The locally owned franchise features a menu that combines whole fruits, organic vegetables and nutritional enhancers. It’s open daily.

Empire Place is getting two new tenants: a blowout salon and Korean barbecue restaurant. Drybar is a national chain that specializes in blowouts. The 10-chair salon is expected to open in September. Dae Gee Korean BBQ is a locally owned franchise of a Denver-based chain. The restaurant projects an opening in late October or early November.

Tan on Demand is under new ownership. The tanning studio at 3024 W. 57th St. is now owned by four business partners who also recently bought The Bunker Bar in Harrisburg. Tan on Demand has expanded to include offering mobile spray tans for individuals or groups. It also rents private suites to other service providers.

Beds & Beds employee Ryan Redding is buying the business at 1017 W. 41st St. from Carl Klaudt, who has owned it since 2015.  Beds & Beds also added a neighborhood U-Haul dealership to its site in 2018, which is part of the acquisition.

Online business Pasque Boutique has leased space at The Steel District. Owner Alicia Engelking started the women’s clothing boutique in 2019 and also has been doing pop-up shops. The store is expected to open in summer 2024.

East Bank Storage has opened at 720 E. Third St., providing 46 climate-controlled units and 30 cold-storage units in its first phase. It’s aimed at the growing number of residents in apartment and condo developments downtown.

Leonardo’s Cafe in the Washington Pavilion has been renamed The WP and is being redesigned to create more of a coffee shop/bistro atmosphere. The lunch menu has been revamped, and the café has added breakfast. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Father-and-son owners Tim and Justice Verhey have started My Buddy’s Garage, a do-it-yourself vehicle repair shop. It features lifts, air compressors and tools. The shop at 600 S. Charlotte Ave. is open Friday nights and on weekends.

A new food truck features “lots of flavor” from Mexico and Central American countries. Friends Roxana Texta and Gladys Almendarez have started La Sabrosita. They are selling tacos, burritos, special dishes, fruit bowls and more at sporting events and other gatherings. La Sabrosita can be booked for public and private events.

A century-old building on downtown’s east side is coming back to life with a coffee business and florist moving in this year. Daylily Coffee and In Flower have leased the two available spaces in the building at 1010 E. Eighth St. and are starting construction. Andrew Fritz and Ariana Vandersnick started Daylily about a year ago, selling roasted coffee beans online. They will use the space for roasting but will have some hours when it’s open to the public as more of “a tasting room versus a full cafe,” Vandersnick said. That’s expected to happen this summer. In Flower has been selling dried flower arrangements online since 2019. The new shop will offer both dried and fresh floral arrangements, both for walk-in and custom orders. Owner Stephanie Disse hopes to be open by early fall.

B&G Milkyway has opened at 69th and Cliff. It features a double-lane drive-thru and a turfed lawn for outdoor seating and yard games. The seasonal ice cream shop that also serves other food is open daily.

A Beresford couple has started a mobile coffee shop that also serves baked goods. Damon and Allie Jarabek own Black Iris. It pops up at businesses in the Sioux Falls area and can be booked for public and private events.

Thalia Bar has been renamed The Wine Bar at Allure. It opened in March inside Allure Health at 7000 S. Lyncrest Place and serves wine, champagne, beer and nonalcoholic cocktails. It features a tapas menu. Hours are 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
