Longtime downtown florist will move to south Sioux Falls

April 6, 2021

After 35 years in downtown Sioux Falls, Josephine’s Floral Designery is moving south.

The flower and gift shop has left the 8th & Railroad Center and will be opening this summer at The Wedge on Western at 69th Street and Western Avenue.

In the meantime, owner Josephine Schallenkamp and her team are filling orders from a temporary location not open to the public.

“It’s just calling and internet, but that’s pretty much the majority of our business anyway, and the last few days have made me feel really good because we’ve been crazy busy,” she said. “So I don’t think being here is going to hurt us any.”

Josephine’s was established in 1984, originally in the Carpenter Building, and has been at 8th & Railroad for 28 years.

The new space at The Wedge is 2,000 square feet and will be next to Breadico.

“We’re really excited,” Schallenkamp said. “My drivers said most of our deliveries are out there, so it will just be more convenient.”

It also will be the only dedicated flower shop on the south side of town, she added.

“It’s going to be a completely different look from my old shop. We had a lot of antiques, and it was a cozy feeling, but at The Wedge, it’s going to be very clean and modern.”

The Wedge is essentially full with Josephine’s lease. All that remains is a 1,000-square-foot space in the back of the building, thanks to expansions from Define fitness center and EarthWise Pet Supply & Grooming.

While it was a quick transition for Josephine’s from downtown to a temporary space, it worked out thanks to a lot of help, Schallenkamp said.

“That’s the thing that’s been so cool. Customers and friends, every time there’s an obstacle, somebody steps in. It has made it so much easier.”
