Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

The Helmsley Behavioral Health Center, a new wing at Avera Behavioral Health Hospital, has opened. The new Behavioral Health Urgent Care offers 24-hour access to mental health services for people in crisis. It also offers observation care, which allows patients time to stabilize. Other services offered at the Helmsley Center at 4400 W. 69th St. include residential addiction care for youth, partial hospitalization services for youth, a specialized unit for children and the senior behavioral health unit.

The nation’s largest family-operated organic and natural grocery store is coming to Sioux Falls. Natural Grocers is taking over the space at 2601 S. Louise Ave., which most recently was Northern Tool + Equipment. According to the company’s website, the plan is to open the store sometime this summer.

The ownership group that includes Parker’s Bistro, DaDa Gastropub and Icon Events is buying the building that includes Club David. Stacy Newcomb said she anticipates renovating the building’s interior and exterior and making food “a main component, if not the main component” of the business.

Profile by Sanford is now Profile Plan Nutrition + Wellness, one of several moves made in recent months following an acquisition by a North Carolina-based firm. Ten Oaks Group, a family office investment firm, acquired Profile from a for-profit arm of Sanford Health at the beginning of the year. Profile’s corporate staff members are working out of office space at The Good Samaritan Society’s national campus but will be moved into office space north of 85th Street and Louise Avenue over the next few months.

A new restaurant focusing on Brazilian cuisine, Roots of Brasil, has opened in part of the historic Stockman’s Exchange Bank building at Eighth Street and Weber Avenue. It’s owned by Brazilian native Tania Grogan and her family, and is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday.

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate LLC has opened a Sioux Falls office. Owner Brandon Martens and responsible broker Breck Miller are leading Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Beyond at 5915 S. Remington Place.

Tenants are beginning to fill up the renovated Johnson Building at 11th Street and Second Avenue that Justin and Chrissy Johnson bought last year. Most recently it was the headquarters of the Sioux Falls Ministry Center before it moved to the Empower Campus. Second-floor tenants include the law firm Evans Haigh & Arndt and Lenae Design, which provides residential and commercial interior design services. Discovery Realty Group will have a space on the first floor, along with Preach-es, which will sell higher-end clothing and sneaker brands.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers has opened its first South Dakota location at Dawley Farm Village. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It’s on the north side of the development at 600 S. Highline Place. A second Sioux Falls location near The Empire Mall is slated to start construction in May and open later this year.

The first Caribou Cabin in Sioux Falls has opened. The drive-thru and walk-up version of Caribou Coffee is at 1720 E. 10th St. Hours are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. A second location that’s under construction along 26th Street west of Veterans Parkway is expected to open this fall.

Brian Rieger and his sons, Nate and David, have purchased the food truck Ma & Pa’s Burger, which started in 2019, and renamed it Pa & Sons. They opened with a similar menu of burgers, hot dogs, chili dogs and fries and will begin to put their mark on it as they gain experience. All three men have full-time jobs, so they’ll focus on weekend events, brewery outings and a few weekday lunches. Pa & Sons is available for private bookings too.

Kane’s Baked Goods is now Kane’s Baked Goods & Cafe with the addition of a food truck to the in-home bakery. Owner Chelsea Alexander uses a parking lot on 10th Street just east of Minnesota Avenue as a base and serves breakfast items along with her baked goods every day of the week. She plans to add lunch. Kane’s also is available for public and private events.

Locally owned 3 Degrees is expanding with franchising and a new partnership. The infrared sauna studio, which recently moved its south location to The Bridges at 57th, has a development agreement with the owners of Massage Envy locations in the Chicago area to spearhead expansion in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.  Another franchisee plans to open a location in the Atlanta area. 3 Degrees also has a new partnership with Sioux Falls-based Year Round Brown to put infrared saunas in its locations, beginning with the one that opened earlier this year at The Bridges.

Parlour Ice Cream House has reopened for the season with new ownership and plans for adding new menu items. Manager Emma Houwman is part of the new ownership group, which took over from founders Chris and Caryn Hanmer. In addition to ice cream, it serves sorbet and gelato. The plan is to add ice cream sandwiches and root beer floats. Hours will be expanding from previous seasons. The shop will open at 4 p.m. daily until school is out, and then expand to noon to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Maggiano’s Italian Classics, a ghost kitchen patterned after the national Italian restaurant chain, has started operating in Sioux Falls. It’s owned by Brinker International, the same company as the full-service Maggiano’s as well as Chili’s, the restaurant whose kitchen prepares the delivery-only menu. Chili’s also serves as the ghost kitchen for It’s Just Wings. Another newer ghost kitchen offering in the city is Wow Bao, which operates out of Fazoli’s.

Illinois-based private equity firm Industrial Opportunity Partners has acquired Raven Engineered Films, a division of the former Raven Industries. When CNH Industrial acquired Raven last year, it acknowledged the possibility of selling off the engineered films and Aerostar divisions, focusing on the applied technology division geared toward precision agriculture. “IOP is excited to have this partnership and provide the resources to support a future of growth and success,” said Dave Mackin, IOP’s operating principal. Scott Wickersham, president and general manager of Raven Engineered Films, will assume the position of CEO under new ownership.

Serenity Asian Massage has opened at 22nd and Minnesota. Services include Swedish massage, hot stones, a walk on the back, elbow massage and reflexology. The business offers private suites and shower plus a dessert and a drink with services.
