Design House expands business model

Oct. 4, 2019

Design House is opening its doors to the public.

The historic building at 910 N. Main Ave. started two years ago as a hub for independent designers.

“We ended up getting more and more feedback from the public than we did designers,” owner Megan Peterson said. “So we ended up taking on more projects, which snowballed into bigger and better projects, so we pivoted to become a design studio that still focuses on trade designers.”

Design House takes on projects individually and as a team. Its showroom regularly brings in new merchandise and sells it to designers.

“We’ve heard from the public they want to come shop but feel they can’t,” Peterson said. “We’re probably one of the best places in town for gift or unique items, so we feel like we’re doing a disservice to Sioux Falls if we don’t let them shop.”

The showroom expanded last year to include the lower level and will be stocked even more, she said.

“We’ll still offer the latest and greatest from the market, and we still sell to designers like we always have. We’ll still take care of them and their clients.”

The timing for inviting the public in is especially good as more people live downtown, she said.

“I think with the development on North Main it’s just the time to make something happen.”

Hours might adjust but will start at 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Today, the store will hold its first public open house in conjunction with First Friday and will be open until 7 p.m. The grand opening will continue Saturday during normal store hours. Items will be 20 percent off both days.
