Latino food truck serves ‘lots of flavor’

June 21, 2023

A new food truck is bringing “lots of flavor” from Mexico and Central American countries to Sioux Falls streets.

Roxana Texta has started La Sabrosita with her friend Gladys Almendarez, whom she calls mom after Almendarez took her in as a teen-ager.

The two love to cook, said Texta, who is now 35, married and has two children. Her first job in Sioux Falls was at Mexican restaurant, and she most recently was a cook at Apple Tree Children’s Center. Almendarez, who lives just five houses away from Texta, has always cooked for her family.

“We are planning to do a different menu every time,” Texta said of the outings for La Sabrosita.

That will range from staples such as tacos and burritos to the Salvadoran specialty pan con pollo, which is stewed chicken served on a roll with veggies, and the traditional Mexican soup pozole.

They’ll always serve Crazy Pineapple and Crazy Watermelon, which is cut fruit served with sour and salty Mexican candies, drizzled with chamoy sauce and sprinkled with the seasoning Tajin.

They’re planning to add more desserts like Mexican ice cream, she said.

“We’ll incorporate more things as we get out.”

La Sabrosita made its debut at soccer matches at Yankton Trail Park and participated in a Latino flea market Sunday.

Texta said the food truck doesn’t have a specific location where it will set up and instead will be found at sporting events and other gatherings.

It can be booked for public events or catering by calling Texta at 605-937-3734.
