La Plaza Fiesta opens with extensive menu

Dec. 6, 2022

The long wait is over: La Plaza Fiesta Mexican Restaurant is open on the south side of Sioux Falls.

The owners announced their plans in July 2021 for the full-service restaurant at 521 W. 85th St. in front of Walmart, but construction delays and “a lot of things” led to the slow progress.

After all those months, they weren’t going to let a couple of other delays stop them from opening Monday, co-owner Krystal Hernandez said in a Facebook Live post.

She’s from Madelia, Minnesota, and didn’t realize that the process of getting a beer and wine license takes longer in Sioux Falls. That likely won’t be issued until January, she said, so in the meantime, “we’re going to have the coolest, best mocktails in Sioux Falls. And we are going to have Coke products, we’re going to have Mexican Coke in a bottle, we’re going to have the Jarritos,” which are Mexican fruit-flavored soft drinks.

The good news is that means a second grand-opening party with alcohol, she said.

The other delay is the menus haven’t been printed yet, so customers will have to use a QR code for a few days to see what’s available.

Here’s a look at them too.

Diners can sit at the bar, which features a custom “coconut” light installation overhead.

There are booths along the window and walls and plenty of tables, with total seating for 140 people.

La Plaza Fiesta will be open daily at 11 a.m., closing at 9 p.m. Sunday, 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
