Japanese teppanyaki restaurant to open on city’s west side

June 3, 2021

A traditional Japanese teppanyaki restaurant is coming to the west side of Sioux Falls.

The owner of Tasteas is expanding with a second location that will be a full restaurant. It will be in a retail center on Sertoma Avenue north of 41st Street next to Flyboy Donuts and Stensland Family Farms.

“It’s my dream to open a Japanese restaurant, and that’s what I’ve always done,” said Chunxing Pan, who moved to Sioux Falls from the East Coast in 2014 to work at a Japanese restaurant. “The differences between Samurai Tasteas and other Japanese restaurants, especially hibachi, is not only that we have the best boba tea in Sioux Falls, but also because I want everyone to know what traditional and delicious Japanese teppanyaki is.”

Pan started Tasteas at 1018 W. 41st St. in 2017.

Samurai will focus on the food rather than the entertainment of the chef cooking the food, although the meals will be prepared in front of customers, he said.

“The atmosphere of the restaurant will be full of happiness and the fragrance of various iron plate foods. This happiness is more of a surprise brought by our drinks and unique cooking methods. But I will not decorate the restaurant like a palace, but I will pay more attention to the content.”

In addition to teppanyaki, there will be a sushi bar.

He hopes to be open no later than September.

“We’re excited for another restaurant option for the west side of the city,” said Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos., the leasing agent for Roosevelt Marketplace. “This area has been somewhat underserved by restaurant options.”

One 1,711-square foot space remains for lease at Roosevelt Marketplace next to Samurai Tasteas.

“I think it’s a great location for a services tenant, such as a salon,” Tysdal said.

Tenants of Roosevelt Marketplace were attracted to the location because of its proximity to Roosevelt High School, the largest school in South Dakota, as well as all the mature neighborhoods in the area, according to Tysdal.
