Could it have come at a better time? Today marks National Plan for Vacation Day, encouraging you to plan your vacation days for the entire year at the start of the year.

“If you don’t take time to plan your vacations, sometimes you don’t end up taking them — and we know people need that chance to get away now more than ever,” said Teri Schmidt, executive director of Experience Sioux Falls.

“But, of course, you don’t need to leave town to feel like you got away. So today is the perfect time to pull out a calendar and look at everything coming up in Sioux Falls this year that deserves a vacation day for you.”

She’s right: Nearly one in four Americans doesn’t plan travel and consequently doesn’t take as much time off as they could, according to a study by Destination Analysts. And more than two-thirds feel at least moderately burned out, while 13 percent report feeling extremely burned out.

So as you plan your vacation, start with a quiz to test your knowledge of iconic Sioux Falls landmarks.

It’s quick, fun, and you can win a Sioux Falls Sourced box of fantastic local items.

“We’ve been using these boxes to encourage others to explore Sioux Falls in their travel planning, but it’s just as fun to discover what’s happening in your own hometown,” Schmidt said.

Take the quiz here.

In 2021, more than 1.2 million visitors traveled to Sioux Falls, creating more than $437 million in estimated economic impact. We counted 186,622 visitors who entered the Falls Park Visitor Information Center from all 50 states. Visitors to South Dakota spent a record-setting $4.4 billion in 2021, generating 11 percent of state sales tax collections.

National Plan for Vacation Day is a program of the U.S. Travel Association, which is the national, nonprofit organization representing all components of the travel industry.
