Interior design firm to close retail storefront

Dec. 7, 2023

A mother-and-son interior design team is closing its retail storefront in downtown Sioux Falls.

Interiors Etc. will continue to provide residential and commercial design services, said Richard Kelly, whose mother, Mary, started the business in 1975. He joined her full time in 2015, and they opened the retail shop in the first-floor marketplace of the Jones421 Building in August 2021.

“We’ve just had a hard time getting people in the door to be honest,” Kelly said.

“About 70 percent of the customers are out-of-towners. The customer for this store is different than what we thought it would be.”

Interiors Etc. is filled with Christmas decor that’s for sale, Kelly noted, and ornaments are buy-one-get-one-free.

All decor and furniture are marked at a 30 percent discount.

“As time goes on, we’ll deepen the discounts,” he said. “We’re going to try to be out by the end of January.”

The store’s lease runs until the beginning of summer, so the Kellys are looking for someone to sublet or work with Jones421 on a new lease.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The store is on the north end of the building at 421 N. Phillips Ave.
