GreatLIFE Performance & Fitness Center has put the finishing touches on updates to a popular outdoor workout area.
New turf was installed over concrete recently instead of the clay base that previously had been under it and had started to cause maintenance issues.
The concrete will ensure that when patrons drop heavy weights on the turf it won’t dent, said lead trainer Mike Smith.
The outdoor workout area comes equipped with a “Ninja Warrior type” 15-foot incline and decline monkey bar rig, Smith said.
Though the Performance Center is a 24-hour facility, use of the outdoor area is prohibited during non-staffed hours. This helps ensure that if someone were to get hurt on the turf there would be a professional there to help, Smith said.
The Performance Center is staffed from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
The turf was already in place when GreatLIFE moved into the building at 5901 S. Southeastern Ave. in 2016, but Smith said it needed the update to accommodate the number of people who use it for their workouts.
“Being in South Dakota, getting cooped up in the winter can be depressing at times,” he said. “So giving people the chance to work out outside is really advantageous in our climate.”
