Giving Back for June
Giving Back recognizes businesses and organizations that are helping our communities. Here’s a look at who gave back for June.
Dakota Credit Union Foundation
The Dakota Credit Union Foundation has announced a $200,000 commitment to three Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in South Dakota and North Dakota. Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls will receive $50,000 to provide a pediatric oncology exam room to be named in honor of Charlie Murano, son of Abby Murano and Joel Murano. Abby is a staff member at Dakotaland FCU in Aberdeen. Charlie was cared for at the hospital last year before losing his battle with cancer. A $50,000 donation to Monument Health will be earmarked for a specific purpose within the hospital’s upcoming expansion and remodel project. Sanford Children’s in Fargo will receive $100,000 to support the new Credit Unions for Kids Micropreemie Unit, which is expected to begin construction this summer.

Hy-Vee
A Sioux Falls business has received a $5,000 grant from Hy-Vee Inc. as part of an effort to support minority- and women-owned businesses. Salas Salsas took first place in the food and beverage category of the Hy-Vee OpportUNITY Inclusive Business Summit, which was June 18 in Sioux Falls. The $30,000 grand prize winner was Soul Grain of St. Paul. Hy-Vee gave a total of $50,000 in grants. The event featured an expo that offered resources for small businesses, as well as learning opportunities through breakout sessions and one-on-one mentoring with Hy-Vee store leaders.

Scooter’s Coffee
Scooter’s Coffee hosted its annual Day of Giving on June 12 to support agencies supporting foster care families. The 10 Sioux Falls coffee shops owned by Travis and Kristen Rhoades raised $34,300 that was split among four partnering organizations: The Foster Network, Royal Family Kids Camp, Sioux Falls CASA and Family Visitation Center. This year’s fundraiser was the franchise group’s best for total amount and average per store, Travis Rhoades said.

South Dakota Cattlemen’s Foundation
The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Foundation donated $303,622 to Feeding South Dakota earlier this month as part of its 11th annual Prime Time Gala. The donation is earmarked to purchase beef to feed residents in need across South Dakota. The foundation also awarded $15,000 in scholarships to five students attending South Dakota schools who are interested in the improvement of beef production and promotion. It gave $3,000 in prize money to three winners in the Fed Cattle Challenge. The goal of the program is to help develop the next generation of feedyard owners and managers.
